Welcome to UKCS!
I think you've answered your own question!
As you've found out, push don't pull. If you've completely unpegged the tent it should be possible to draw the fabric towards you without having to walk over it.

Hello and welcome. Do you do this solo? Best case scenario is for two to work together, so that one pushes the poles out and the other collects and guides them from the exit of the pole sleeve. I use a footprint groundsheet, slip my shoes/ wellies off and can then walk across the tent pushing the end of the pole as I go. Might get soggy socks if it's raining, so I have a spare pair in the car.
