The top of the barrel has a tendency to unscrew itself - check it is properly tight. If its had a lot of use there might be small holes in the hose. I found that even when working properly theyre terrible and very hard on my back. I got a Bravo BP12 electric pump and it made camping far more enjoyable.
The pump in your picture is the standard type of pump used.
Sounds like somethings loose or not screwed tight as someone has said. Worse case could be a faulty pump.
We bought a new Vango airbeam tent and the pump is identical, just a different colour.
We have only erected it in the garden so far and it was my wife who did all the work and she was amazed at how quick the process was.
I am sure you will feel the same when you get the pump fixed or replaced.

You haven’t got the pipe on the wrong side of the barrel have you? For removing air rather than pumping
No, thankfully :D
It does inflate but seems more work than it should.
I put up the extension and the same thing so doubt a tent issue.
