A Blacks Solace 1 (4 metre bell tent) with its higher walls than most others, will give as much living floor space as most 5 metre bell tents.

Mmm... I will have to disagree with that, after seeing one. But yes compared to a lot of other 4m ones the walls are higher. Good tents as the canvas is heavier, but the clip in groundsheet was not for us

I have an Eldorado and love it, and was going to suggest it until someone mentioned the possibility of Fergus escaping from the front living area, as it does not have a SIG.

However if Fergus sleeps in the fully zipped in inner tent, all would be well.

My quibble with bell tents is that I haven't bee in one yet where I didn't need to stoop to get in, and that annoys me.

Again, the Solace has a higher porch entrance than most, irrespective of diameter. I am 6' 4 "

They are 188 and 200 cm respectively.
Hope this helps?

This is true. Our door height is 5ft 7inch, some are a bit higher and some lower. The other main problem with Bell tents is the lack of windows. Ok its not a problem on a warm day as the mesh front doors allow you to see out. We decided to add clear windows to ours, and I know there are some makes that have them fitted. No tent seems perfect in every way but for around £500 they are hard to beat IMO. I am a great fan of the obelink range of tents and was torn between the Bell and the Alaska. Don't think you would go far wrong with either make.

Well, a non-stoop doorway puts a Bell tent back in temptation’s way next time I find myself contemplating my already bigger than necessary tent collection

Many do, but alas the Blacks doesn't. Whilst the clip in system works for me, I can understand the preference for a zig (wouldn't want a sig, though).
I had spoken at some length with the then MD of Blacks about this and perhaps one or two other mods....this was a couple of years ago.... and was told a modified tent was in the pipeline accordingly, (and some overdue alterations to the appalling website) and would I like to test it when available?
Would I???

Anyway, nothing since heard since.
I think they may be struggling a bit? I have noted a maker/supplier of another make of bell tent that I am /was particularly keen on....seems to be no more this year...……..
