Hi. I have a amazing canvas tent that I a regularly using for half the year. But once the weather worsens I am not heading out as much as I want to because drying the tent is a piston in the winter, especially for sorry camping trips.
Now the camping sites are starting their sales of thought I'd take a look and see what bargains the are, but don't know where to start...Suggestions please!
I need a quick to build and take down tent add it will mostly be for short trips.
I need a living area that will accommodate my two mats, say 2.2m X 2.2m.
Budget is around £150
Happy to buy second hand
I'd like to be able to kneel in the tent, so a height of around 1.3m.
Weight doesn't matter ads I will be car camping!
SIG would be nice.


Any suggestions?

If you are looking for cotton/canvas/polycotton, I can't think of anything with that budget and new. I was...thinking along the lines of a Robens Fairbanks, but even 2nd hand that would be an excellent price to keep in budget.
(There are reviews and pictures in the reviews sect)

At the lower end of your dimension spec. is the Polish lavvu, a tent I love, made from cotton canvas. Some use small woodburners therein in winter. These don't have a fixed groundsheet, but are as tough as old boots, infinitely adaptable and can be obtained for £30 (Military Mart) (Review also on this site)

edit: just thinking, along that theme, Military Mart (and others?), also sell a cotton canvas Dutch army tent (sig) that is well thought of, and they are designed to zip multiples together....giving you the exact space you want and all for about £70 for two??

Hi Caligula, im not looking for canvas or polycaotton, quite the opposite. Im looking for a nylon / polyester tent that i can use on damp weekends when i dont want to get out the De Waard .

Apologies, read my first post and realised it wasn't clear!

SO suggestions please for a 'plastic' tent.

PS, I've seen this on the decathlon site, it looks ideal for what i want. Thoughts?

I'd take a look at Coleman if I was you. The Tatra (which is the successor to our Phad) goes for about £200 at the moment but you might find a bargain. They also do other dome tents which fit your budget.

Ah, my apologies.
Whilst I don't propose to be a fan of plastic tents, have you had a look at Slumit Flashframe tents?
Also deals can be had through Blacks of Greenock on the Vango XD (beefed up) range?
Decathlon are quite well thought of, although their range is significantly depleted these days.

Thanks Caligula. The slumit looks interesting design. The XD also look just what i am looking for, a good quality winter compact tent.
But, having tried a couple of tents, the main issue i have is the small sleeping areas in these style of tents...While not massively tall, i felt claustrophobic in a 210cm long tent and think that even a 225cm long tent (like some of the Vango XD's) would also be tight leaving just a couple of inches space each end of my mat.
Are there any backpacking style tents that have a sleep area approaching 250cm?
PS, Im not looking for a full height four man, just a compact 2 or 3 man with a long sleep area.

Hi there,

I was looking for 2 man tent to take to Iceland for a 2 week car trip. Budget the same as yours. I settled on a Vango Nemesis Pro 300. It’s a discontinued line so available for a good price.

I highly recommend it. I wouldn’t want to back pack with it but for car camping it was superb. Probably a little lower than you are asking for but the head height was great for that type of tent. The inner was fine and plenty of space for 2. 2 porches with one at head and foot means that length of the inner wouldn’t be an issue. (My husband used a full size air bed)

The geodesic design meant it was very stable in the wind, exactly why I bought it. We are in our 50’s and survived 2 weeks camping in Iceland at the end of May with temps going below zero!

I've spent the last will studying the Vango line up and some competitors. The Nemesis is indeed quite a bargain at the moment, £126 from Summit for a tent that used to be double that. The bedroom looks as spacious as you can find in the Vango trekking line up. The only other models that are causing me a dilemma are the beta 350 and pulsar 300 with their porches. The beta doesn't have quite the high spec of the other two but is quite large and has mesh door which can often prove to be a benefit. The pulsar also looks good with the similar spec to the Nemesis (6000mm ripstop fly, Yunan poles etc) but may just be too small with the bedroom sloping much more than the Nemesis. If only Vango had some pictures with all the tents next to each other to be able to easily compare sizes...

Popped into the local gooutdoors as they had an omega 350 on display to take a look at the porch and bedroom size. I borrowed one of their large SIMs (Outwell Dreamcatcher 12 ) and tried out the bedroom for size. At first it seemed quite roomy, but then I realised My feet were almost touching the inner atv the foott end and with a sleeping bag that would mean I would almost certainly be touching the outer tent and waking up with wet feet...
The Nemesis looks to have much more vertical inner way the foot end, and even if my feet were touching, add the is a porch at both for and head end, I wouldn't be touching the outer and my feet would (hopefully) stay dry!

Had an Omega 350 in the past for camping with the lad & dogs. I remember having plenty length at 5'11". It's a 3 person tent. If it's just you, you could sleep diagonally.

Hi Spiritburner.

looking at the diagrams on vango, the foot end looks to be sloping a touch steeper that 45 degrees. With a 100mm thick mat and my foot around 270mm, you would be losing a similar distance horizontally due to the slope of the tent, reducing the length from 210cm to around 175cm or 5ft 9.

What size gap did you have between the inner and the outer? the tent may have been set up wrong in the store..
