Hi All,

Getting fired up about camping after lockdown, we have a great tent but the porch area is naff.

We saw some great tents last year and had really bad porch envy

We want a 5 or 6 man tent, not massive but with a nice big porch area so we can sit in chairs or small table and be out of the rain and be able to cooking in light rain.

Found one with 125cm and then sloping down another 100 is this ample to you think,

What size porches do you guys have that you feel comfortable doing this with ?

And is it better to have one integral to the tent or do you have extensions ?

I don't want to go to a massive tent but do want a good porch :)

Thanks All

Why not buy a tarp? Cotton, polycotton or plastic......and then adapt to suit?
I have one 16sq metre polycotton tarp that I can use happily with several different large (bell, pyramid) tents, and a smaller lightweight plastic one for bivvying or when I'm on my own in the lavvu or something similar.....

We use a tarp or an event shelter. The tent's just a bedroom really. If you've got younger kids that may not be practical though. Some pics:

A tarp is very versatile, check out the Tarp Origami thread for advice and inspirations.

My own tarp effort with my last tent:

The ridge line method is easy to learn, and attaching the tarp via carabinas would aid quick take down and re-attachment.

I strongly advise against keeping a tarp up unattended during the day and overnight, unless one can be certain of good dry weather with only light winds.

A smaller version of teepee (polish lavvu) and cheap tarp for the solo camper...........just all goes to show that with some inventiveness, a tarp can be adapted to pretty much anything? And tarps come in all sizes and materials and specifications.............

We just bought an extension. I know it’s less versatile and does need pitching but for us it gave us a nice kitchen diner! We love it. They don’t make them for our tent but we bought an Outwell universal one.
