I used to have a share in 9 berth 3 lobed/pod tent years ago (sold a few years back) that a group of mates and I used, and to be honest, with experience, there was not much in it's favour! It was really quite a horrible tent to be blunt! It's got a huge footprint that will likely be too big for some (many!) camp site pitches, the external 'gap' between the pods is pretty unusable as it's full of guy ropes. It's big and heavy when packed, it takes a lot of erecting effort and time with a lot more poles and guy ropes than other tents, it probably wont have a porch area for safe cooking in, or shedding wet/muddy gear. Ours didn't have a SIG in the central section, only in the bedroom pods, so was draughty and bug ridden. With so many stitched joints, ours also leaked a lot!
Having now personally got a poled 5 berth tunnel tent with side by side 2 and 3 berth bedrooms and complete SIG, plus a porch, it's infinitely better in every respect. I've also used a vis-a-vis tent which was great. I'd highly recommend you look at the tunnel tent style with vis-a-vis bedrooms to give your kids a little distance.
Early air tents (and caravan awnings) had a few reliability problems, but the technology has matured, and I think now is as reliable as poles (of which I've had to replace quite a few over the years on various tents!), if not better. If you go for an air tent, try to find one where individual pole tubes can be isolated, so if a leak does develop, the entire tent doesn't deflate.
