Hello All,
Is there such a thing as a steel poled 4 or 5 man tent possible similar in style to Icarus 500 ? Just looking to find something a bit sturdier for adverse weather conditions. TIA

This tent has a mixture of steel and fibreglass. Obelink are an extremely reputable manufacturer and for sales to the UK.

I just watched the pitching video. I can’t work out whether the steel pole that goes in lengthways is structural or just for hanging things from.

Outwell still have some steel poled tents in their range. My now fairly old Glendale 5 has withstood a real battering in it's time. Outwell claimed it could withstand up to Force 9 winds (up to 54mph), and I tend to believe that. Lots of clever features like dual attachment of guys to both steel poles and flysheet lessen the strain taken by the flysheet in poor weather.

I have two similar poles in my Sunncamp tent. They are definitely structural. Mine go one on each side of the tent along the roof line and stick into little pouches at each end. They are stretcher poles and add stability as well as alleviating the problem that many tunnel tents have, of sagging roofs.

The poles are expandable so you stick one end in, then expand the pole until you reach the pouch at the other end, then stretching it tightly, flip a clip which holds it firm. (not sure if I have explained that very well but all becomes clear when you see one)

They do come in handy for hanging light things on too, but I wouldn't hang anything heavy on them. They are held up midway by velco straps.

Looks a nice tent and a good price too. Very similar to the Sunncamp tents with a few differences.

Just watched the video and I am not a lover of curtains on the outside but not a big problem. I think I would have to cut that footprint back to a few inches short of the front of the tent. I couldn't believe it when he hammered a tent peg straight through it

I notice the stretcher pole on that one has holes and nipples for extending it. Might be a problem if you can't stretch it tight enough to find the next hole. I notice it is tied up in the middle rather than velcro straps like mine, but just as good.

It is the sort of tent I would go for if I was looking for a new one.

Interesting, Bob. That sounds like a very sturdy design then.
