I’m brand new to camping. I used to trek in my 20s but then working life got in the way. My OH and I have recently retired but he spends 24/7 playing golf now and with no holidays in sight I’ll go insane if I don’t get out. I play golf too but once a week. Next year he has lots of golfing days away so I have to make a plan. I love walking and nature and want to start travelling around the UK. I will be joining the solo camping WhatsApp group in due course.
When it comes to camping, I suspect I might be a bit of a wimp when it comes to the cold and wet. I was thinking of getting a Napier Sportz Dome-to-go Tent. This means if the weather gets bad I can creep into my car. However, I suspect that some campsites don’t like cars backed up to tents or is it a case of getting the right pitch?
Is this a bad idea or is it workable? I have a hatchback car, not an SUV.

Welcome to UKCS. This topic has been covered in previous threads, so have some fun while OH is golfing by exploring the Search function.
And the answer to your question is yes. It’s sleeping in a car without a tent that may sometimes be a problem, not just with some sites but with issues like condensation.
Given the cost of golf club membership plus the equipment, you’ve got the equivalent budget for a comfortable camping experience.
It wouldn't be for me. We have a car with a tailgate and tried a set up with a tailgate tent. I have to say I hated it! Both the tent and the car were really cold. There was a huge draught under the car which I couldn't block off and it was gappy between the car and the tent which made it all cold and wet. Plus the condensation, it was not a success.
But I love tent camping so I would get a tent which was tall enough to stand up in and space for a comfy chair. Some windows so you can zip up if the weather is bad but still have light and a view. Get a carpet and in colder weather use EHU and take a little heater. You'll be really cosy!
Thanks, I had a go but wasn’t very successful. I think what I find frustrating is not being able to search the whole forum or can you? I tried using the word tailgate in the sub-forums but only found a couple of posts.
Golf isn’t as expensive as people think. I’m looking at the sort of gear I might need to get started and my eyes are starting to water! And that’s just tenting. I’m a bit of a gadget geek so I’ll wager this will cost me more than golf!
However, cheaper than staying in hotels after the initial outlay and I’m looking forward to meeting people although I think like many of the people I’m reading about, happy with my own company too.
I do find the whole solo thing quite daunting which is why the ability to just jump into my car is appealing. I’m sure I’ll feel less anxious once I’ve gone on a couple of trips.

Have spent hours looking at tents now and still can’t decide. If I knew I was really going to do a lot of camping I would probably bite the bullet and buy an air tent which would be easier for me to erect on my own. The Kampa Brean 3 Air Tent looks like a fabulous tent that would suit me but not sure I can get myself to pay so much at this point. I just don’t fancy buying a tiny tent - I think that would put me off from the start.
Ah, so that’s how I search the whole lot - thanks.
My golf clubs are 13 years old and still going strong. Probably works out at less than £50 a year. I bet most serious campers here have gone through at least 3 tents in that time.
