We're currently on a very stony site.   Rock pegs went in but I needed to reposition one and found it almost impossible to remove - it bent the peg puller.

Any advice on how to remove them.   I'm currently dreading packing up on Saturday.

The site's great otherwise, huge pitch, great views, even a picnic table and firepit.

I use a claw hammer (a small half pound one) to remove rock pegs.

I bought a set of screw-in rock pegs and use a hammer drill drive them into the ground and to unscrew them out.

Like Bernie, I use a claw hammer. Usually give the peg a light tap on the side to help loosen it first.

I started camping in July 2012.
I haven't used a peg puller since September 2012!







I literally got the cheapest versions of the above... All from B&M if I recall, and not one of them has broken/bent/needed replacing yet, after 10 years.

Also... change those rubbish plastic heads/hooks for "Baz Washers" (Google them).
They should be a nice snug fit on the 8mm dia hard ground pegs. Leave a small gap between washer and peg head. Claw goes under the head to lever them out. Guyline goes under the washer to ensure they don't slip off.

Tip some water around the peg and start to wiggle it around.

I use a set of Mole-Grips. Use for rock pegs and ideal for broken plastic ones too. If really stubborn I place my Mallet handle on the ground beside the peg as a pivot point, grip the peg with the mole and step on the end of the moles.

PS, my pet hate is finding broken plastic pegs left in the ground, especially if they have been hammered in to just below the surface.

I regularly use a site in Essex that has the toughest ground of any site I've ever used, rock pegs bend on being hammered in to grassed 'soil', and you'd think you'd cemented a ground anchor in when trying to extract! The ground positively laughs at anything less robust than a rock peg! Got friends who take a mains hammer drill and masonry bit to 'pre-drill' the peg holes, it really is that unforgiving!

A combination of above suggestions and pretty much Mucker's kit has overcome the 'struggles' with relative ease after first miserable experience. Generally given up on anything but screw in Rock Pegs and battery drill to insert/extract these days, but IF I use a straight rock peg I soak the ground to both drive pegs in and extract. I use a pry bar to extract (I did modify it slightly to widen the slot to fit rock pegs better, and ground down all sharp edges/corners to make it more comfortable to handle). Never really been a great fan of peg pullers, they always seem to un-bend even with feeble wire pegs!

Life's too short to be fighting tent pegs, go for the easiest option even if it looks like overkill. I now include a small masonry bit in with my battery drill to make a pilot hole in troublesome ground.

As per Monty 15's comment above, I too needed to get the grinder out and open the slot on the pry bar thing. (I forgot all about that... it was so long ago!)

I assume the slot on all/most claw hammers are wide enough to start with. Mine certainly is.
