We're sat here in our old Aura 300, impressed with how well made it seems to be and how well it goes up. Over the last 9 months, we've had two Alpha 400's sent back, tears in the fabric, pulling zips, fly sheet not fitting properly. We've had two of these previously, and they have been great. Notice that Go Outdoors, Millets and Winfields hardly stock any Vango these days. Also, the trekking tents are now 3,000 hh from 5,000hh. What's going on, anyone else had any issues with recent Vango buys?

The reason for the HH reduction on some tents is, I believe, due to their using recycled plastics in the tents. As for quality, certainly in my more backpacking tents, no diminution in quality or design. I don't often buy anything from those outlets, so can't comment on their stocking, but many suppliers supply Vango products as discounted (compared to Vango's own website) prices.

I've had my Vango tent 7 years now and had no issues with it but I agree that some of the newer stuff doesn't have the build quality

Yes, the Aura we camped out at the weekend is brilliantly put together, that must be 7 years old too, the two recent Alpha purchases were dreadful. I’m not sure why using recycled materials should result in poorly constructed tents and/or lower quality, or why HH should be lower!!

I believe? the quoted HH is lower because the material source will be inconsistant. My Starav (3000HH) has been out in some deluges and not leaked a drop, nor have I seen any diminution of quality?
In fact, guiltily considering another Vango tent....that'll be 3 in the collection...........

Is possible to check the weight of the tent model and compare it from other sources i.e solely camping stores to catalogues, online or stores that aren't specifically dedicated to selling just camping gear.. reason being my son has a Vango..he was told it was a "proper one" by a neighbor camper and that some identical tents are made cheaper to keep costs down for the larger national multi retailers that use a thinner material..it's just a thought..he has had no problems with it at all and it's approx 9 years old...I myself had a Coleman coastline from 2011 for 7 years no major problems..got a 1992 abbey gts 212 now..

Many designs are used/copied by other manufacturers and made to varying standards, which in turn will affect weight, as they made with differing cloths or weights of cloth, materials, etc.

Do they not have copy rights on tent design?

They will have copyrights to aspects of the design but a ridge is a ridge and a tunnel is a tunnel. They would have to come up with a radically different design to claim copyright. Durston probably has.

My original post was to question if a tent model made by a manufacturer could be made using 2 different materials IE one weighing less than the other ..this could of been their reason of their problem.could it be possible that a manufacturer makes 2 identical tents to satisfy 2 different types of retailer..by checking the overall weight of the SAME make and SAME model it maybe the answer to the original post...Gary

Vango make the same style of tents in different material and with different names. So, you would have the F10 lightweight version vs the regular vango. Coleman have been known to do the same with their cobra model.

It wouldn't happen unless they were from different years. Go on their website and the material specs etc are there for each model for that year.
