Hello Campers
We have always camped both pre and post family. We currently have a 4 man Vango and it's been very good.
However now our 2 kids are adults, my wife and I are thinking about getting a lighter 3 person tent for trips.
The spec we are after is that the tent should include a separate well ventilated cooking/storage area that we can stand up in, or at least sit comfortably in chairs.
Another feature that would help, is easy access from either side.
Also, I know that wedge shaped tents are better for windy weather stability, but when it pours with rain, you get wet going in and out of sloping doors, so some kind of solution for this would be ideal.
I'm happy to buy second hand tents, if in good condition and don't mind doing a bit of research, but would prefer to get some feedback from real people, in the field (literally).
Finally, cost does come into the equation, of course, so we want the best of all worlds... A reasonably priced, lightweight, 3 man tent, that will withstand 3 seasons UK weather, where you can stand up in the outer section, and won't get soaked going in or out in the rain!
Please send your feedback and ideas.
Thanks
Alan

hi gear gobi 4 would fit perfectly, yes i know its descbribed as a 4 berth tent but as we found with ours it was best used as either a very roomy 2 berth or enough room for a third bed, it has standing room in the bedroom aswell as in the front of the tent which has 3 doors, so no need to worry about which way the wind/rain was coming as you could get in and out without the weather. you could put a porch on the front which we used the kalahari one and fitted perfectly

Have a look at Khyam Loctec Dallington 3.0, large and XL versions available.
We've had a Khyam similar to it for almost 30 years and it has never failed us.

Whereabouts do you live? Are you able to get to a display of tents such as they have at Winfields in Haslingden. This gives you an opportunity to wander in and out of them all, and even if you don't choose one of theirs, you get an idea of the size and shape you need to look for.
The last tent we bought (from them) is a Vango 3 man tunnel tent. It has 3 'hoops', 2 doors, 2 same size compartments with just enough space to have 2 small chairs to sit on and a stove. The height was limited, I could stand up with my head bowed, am 5'3.
The huge advantage of it is that 2 people can put it up in about 10 mins.

I was recently looking for a relatively 'cheapish' (more a mid priced one with a good end of season discount, rather than a true budget one!), compact floorplan (small pitch restraint!), 4 berth tent with twin bedrooms, and I was surprised at how few were tall enough to stand in (for a 6 footer)! It seems that you often need to look to bigger 5/6 berth tents to find ones with good headroom!
Of course the well established 'rule' of always downgrade the manufacturers claim on berths by at least 1 unless you want to be 'intimate' with your fellow sleepers, and have no baggage in sleeping area, applies! I was only looking to accommodate 2 of us.
I had in the end, to settle for a tent without a separate 'porch' area, as again they only seemed available on larger tents! That went against one of my 'must have' principles of a tent, but I had to compromise somewhere to meet all the other requirements.
Lightweight and 3 season are slightly opposing requirements, lightweight is usually 3000HH (or even 2000HH on budget stuff!), wetter season use 4000HH or higher.
Got to agree with suggestion to visit a supplier with a display section, Go-Outdoors, or Decathlon are well known chains that usually have erected tents to examine.
Second-hand tents can be a gamble, if heavily used, then probably only limited life left if actually in good order in first place! The polyester fabric degrades in the sun, and seam taping is often getting dubious, fibreglass poles also often fail after some use. A fair number of posts on here of people having bought s/h and seeking solutions to re-waterproof (not really going to happen with a polyester tent once polyurethane fabric lining degraded), or replacement poles! Condition is everything, so seeing erected and examining closely is advised. A packed tent can just be a bag of trouble! I bought my old Outwell Glendale s/h and it's been fine, so it is possible to find a good one, but it was a relatively expensive top end tent in the first place and it wasn't very cheap s/h!

We've just down sized from a air Parkdale 4pa to a poled Odessa 5, very similar just a bit shorter. Might be worth a look at £199.99 from Wow camping.

I've been admiring the Vango Harris 350... it has stand-up height, the flat front for more space and a useful built-in front canopy with sides. The front door threshold folds flat and, has a flyscreen too. Seems it can be opened up also to allow more of the view. Comes in poled and air versions but for tent this size, what's wrong with poles. Oh, and it has a cross-tension band for added stability.

If it weren't for the fact that I have a Kampa Brean 3, as I wanted all the above, I'd have itchy fingers. But actually it doesn't have the side canopy nor the bugscreen at the door.
Someone else on here has mentioned the Robens 300 Cabin, should a larger budget be available which looks and sounds the biz.
