We have just been away in our Hartford XL, the Saturday was VERY windy, and two of the metal joiner tubes on the poles snapped in half, (there are now four metal tubes) and therefore have made a rip in the tent. Do you think this is a manufacturers fault? surely the metal bits should not have broken, I could have understood the poles snapping but not the metal bits. Will we be able to go back to the shop and get a refund or a new tent?? What does everyone think?? Thanks.

Hi

My new tent has also snapped at the weekend, shop has been fine and I am now awaiting new poles.  I sure you'll have no problems.

I believe from friends with the same tent as you bardencampers that outwell are fab when it comes to replacing things or giving you a refund - whatever you want really so I shouldn't worry too much !

You mean the metal ferrules have split? That`s quite common if the poles are flexing a lot. Angled ferrules do bend in half as well just because of the design. It`s best to carry spares for emergencies.

You might get a refund seeing as it`s a new tent though. Never hurts to try! But they could argue that leisure tents are usually meant for 2-3 season use, not extreme wind conditions.

yes try and get an exchange or refund.  According to the manufacturers, this is 2-3 season we are in right now, so they can't quibble it wasn't made to withstand this weather!

explain season 2, and 3,?
lets be clear here season 4, is extreme and yet you can get extreme winds any day of the year, normally just before a storm kicks off the winds pick up, so I would expect the makers had tested there goods for use in this country wouldnt you.
unless they changed there ratings again like they did with sleeping bags.

I`m playing devil`s advocate here...just trying to think of things the shop staff might say to you in order to not give you a refund.

Did you put it up correctly? One reason ferrules split is because you haven`t inserted the poles fully and firmly into the ferrules.

Extreme wind isn`t really covered by 2-3 season tent design. Practically everything we use here are leisure tents, and not designed for extreme conditions. Seasons are defined as "normal" weather, whatever that means. If many other tents on site were down, then the weather was extreme. If your`s was the only tent damaged then it`s more likely that the tent was at fault.

From outwell website -

To ensure that all our tents are worthy of the OutwellŽ name we put them through a series of challenging tests to guarantee we are happy with the quality of manufacture and components.

  • All fabrics are tested for colourfastness outside in the open over a period of 12 months
  • Each tent is placed inside our rain simulator to ensure that the design of each style works under the most inclement of conditions
  • Our wind machine is used to test the tents under further extreme conditions in both family and specialist environments.
  • All components are thoroughly tested for strength and durability.

  • You shouldn't have any trouble getting them to replace / refund.. off to test ours for the first right now!  Scottish Highlands here we come!

I've posted the Sale of Goods Act on the 'Life in General' forum have a look then you know your rights.

I'd go back to the shop and ask for a refund or if you are happy with the tent, a replacement.

    Right there Wildie...

and it comes from different directions too.   It was downdraughts killed out Outwell Family Dome XL  (Four sections of 11 mm Durawrap split on the upwind size)

Have now replaced with Aluminium - becasue I didn't think conditions were truly extreme.
