Hi

I'm new to camping and don't have transport.  I'm looking for a site that is within close proximity of a train or coach station, or maybe a bus that goes from there to the camp site.  Can anyone recommmend a good camp site and possibly one that has a website that I can look at.

Thank You,

Tonka

There is a ccc site at Moreton, near Dorchester. Very close to the rail station. You can take the train for days into Weymouth, Dorchester or Poole. I know there is a website, so will google it for you and come back.

There is also Hollands Wood near Brockenhurst in the New Forest. A Rail Station within walking distance, also buses into Lymington, or train connection for Isle of Wight.

There is Weymouth too. The National Express coach stops outside the entrance to the Weymouth Bay and Seaview Haven Holiday Camps. This is my stamping ground, so these are all the ones I know of.

I am sure many more people will be able to tell you about their area.
Good luck! Carole

Googled the site at Morton. http:///SiteDetails.aspx?SiteId=6290&RegionId=5&NearCoast=False&Caravan=-1&MotorCaravan=-1&Tent=3&TrailerTent=-1 not sure if this link will work, but try campingandcaravanclub web site. Actually, if you are on a budget it might work out expensive if you have to keep paying train fares.
You would be better with the Weymouth option, where you can walk to the beach.

Thanks I'll check those out.  As for train fares, I was thinking more of traveling from home to the site and then the return ticket only, no other train or buses expenses.  i'm only planning on a weekend for my first time.

Hi Tonka - from memory Robin Hood's Bay is not very well served by public transport. Nearest station would be Whitby (quite a way by bus from there to Robin Hoods Bay). Not many buses as a rural area. I suppose if you are only going for the weekend then this would not matter too much as once you are on the campsite you could go for walks etc.

Where do you live? This will give us ideas for suggestions.

Head up into Northumberland, sites in Seahouses, Bamburgh etc all the way up to Berwick and all served by buses from Newcastle Haymarket bus station. Try contacting Arriva buses or look them up on their website. I'm a bus driver for a different company in North Tyneside but will see what I can find out.

If you really are keen on Robin Hoods Bay (beautiful place - used to take the sixth form there for Biology field trips - I know the latin names for just about all the seaweeds and animals you'll find on that beach - how sad am I?!!!!), contact Tourist Information at Whitby - they'll be able to tell you about public transport links and campsites.

It really is worth investing in some driving lessons, because we live in a beauliful country and most of the really beauliful camp sites are on top of the cliffs or  down leafy lanes, I do know one friend who public transports it to the nearest place they want then uses a taxi. She says can be pricy. But worth it in the end. Walkings good too! But go lightweight!

All the best welcome on board!

How about cycling? You can get quite a decent amount of camping equipment on a bike, and it`s posible to take bikes on trains.

Ok, Tonka done some research and if you click this link then click on the route map or timetable links at the bottom of the page that comes up you'll have a fair few, good camping areas opened up to you. Day tickets are at present £4.50 for an Adult and offer unlimited travel in the Northeast. They also do a £6.50 ticket which offers unlimited travel further afield on Arriva buses.

Also you can get a Stagecoach bus from Newcastle to Cumbria which opens up that little known camping destination, the Lake District. You'll be able to buy a day ticket on those as well which will get you there then onto local service buses which serve the whole of the Lakes as Stagecoach are the main operator in this area.

There is also a bus (Service AD122) which runs from Wallsend Metro via the route of Hadrians Wall all the way to Bowness on Solway which opens up other campsites to you, if you prebook on this service they can carry bikes if you wanted to try sites a little further off the beaten track.

Look up Stagecoach and Arriva on the web for more info, find out route info and then look at the campsite search facility to see which campsites are near to the various routes.
