Hi

I'm also a newbie :-) I suggest you have a look at some of the online tents retailers, outdoor megastore is good, as is allweather.co.uk to try and look at the sort of thing you might like.

Most of the in real life retailers don't have their displays set up until about March from what I've seen, so if you want to see before you buy you may need to wait.

I looked at what we required in a tent, the number of berths we needed, then I asked around, on here and friends who camp and narrowed it down to a short list then asked again on here and ended up plumping for a Wynnster Anglesey Excel.

I've bought blind as the sales are on now, retailers are getting rid of 2005 stock, so tents are up to half price, and we felt it was worth the risk of buying without seeing for the amount we would save.

If there's 4 of you, according to what I've read on here you need at least a 6 berth. You need to decide if you want a sewn in groundsheet or not (do a search for SIG for the pros and cons of both) and then take it from there.

Good luck :-)

Amanda

Hello and welcome to UKCS, the best site in the whole world, virgincamper. You could find yourself at the brink of a whole new way of life here!

Just tell us a wee bit more about your requirements - e.g. type of hols you plan (short breaks and/or full week/fortnight) age and gender of children, preferred bedroom arrangement (three, two, one big one for you all to share? all at one end or spaced away from each other, do you need to be able to stand up in them?) Have you seen any tents (real or virtual) that you like the look of? And what is your budget range?

(O and just a wee tip - writing in captials makes it look like you are shouting.)

Hi

Welcome to UKCS.

Presumably you need to see some tents erected before making your mind up. Most camp shops dont have displays in the winter - but if you know what you want online is as good as anything.

We use Gelert tents - have 2x5 man tents a Lokon Vario 5 and a Cadiz 5 - you probably need at least a 5 man tent or a bigger 6 man tent for your family - always get one bigger than the manufacturers size rating!

Sometimes Halfords sell tents cheaply - but online I would definately recommend Bucks Camping - excellent service, delivery in a couple of days and brilliant after service if it is needed.

Enjoy your camping - we love it - and if you can why not try one of the UKCS meets next year!

Les.

You could try Tyneside Caravans at Potobello, Birtley or Barrons at Burtree Gate just off the A1. Both will have displays in the New Year.

There is also another whose name I forget at Wide Open, they also have a display in the New Year.

It will give you an idea to start with then just keep asking around and looking at the offers.

Our Marechal Vario 5 Canpoy is terrific, bought for £199 last February.

Good Luck

united british caravans at sandy lane is the place at wide open i think. they do have lots of tents up on display outside but dont know when/if they take them down and up in the winter.

tyneside caravans the place at portobelo birtley, has quite a few on display outside as well which probably stay up all the time as they are covered with a sort of canopy, there are some up inside as well. this is the place where i bought my last tent and it was reasonably priced here.

welcome to the site!

Hi and welcome to this very addictive site.
If you let the folks on here know things like the ages of your kids, and the type of holiday you are after - long stay/short breaks etc they will give recommendations on the various tents.
I know many people like myself, who have young children prefer bedroom pods that are next to each other, or large enough for the kids to be in with them, whereas for those with teenages, prefer that the kids pods are at the far end of the tent.

What I would suggest is to consider the size of the living area, especially if the children are youngish as there will be times when you are confined to barracks.   A living area where you can all fit confortably makes a big difference.

Any questions - just ask and odds are somebody on here will be able to answer!
