Calling all Weathermaster experts

We bought a Weathermaster Plus last year - best tent ever (as we all know !)

However, I have found that when the wind gets under the roof section it make a heck of a noise and really lifts up.  Is this anything to worry about.

The only reason I ask is that we bought the Weathermaster because our previous tent got ripped in some very high winds in Northumberland.  So now we're a lot more worried about any windy conditions.

Coleman suggested pitching it into the wind, which is all well and good, but what happens when the wind changes direction in the middle of the night.

Yes I found my Weathermaster noisy when the wind changed directions to hit full on to the side, but no damage was done and it stood firm all night.  Also due to the baffles on the side of the roof, the wind blows them up stopping rain getting under the roof, which is a clever idea.

We also have a Weathermaster, and I've been concerned when it gets windy.  Any tips for stopping the sides from flapping too - they often seem to be a bit baggy.

Hello again DandD and Topcat.  You know those 4 hooks on a short piece of elastic at each corner of the roof, which I think are actually just for fastening the roof in place when you've rolled it back, but I wind these round the poles once or twice when the roof is closed then hook them onto the eyes at the end of the zips.  Not sure if this is intended by Coleman or not, but it does a good job of tightening things up a bit.

Hi again,

The only bits of elastic that I can think of are on the ends of the 'porch' bit (Our Weathermaster is about 4 years old now, so I don't know if it's changed over that time) - are those the bits you mean?  Have to admit though, only put the porch bit up once (the first time we used it), and came back to the tent to find that we had a small swimming pool formed on top of it! - Have just rolled it up ever since.  I was considering chopping this bit in half, and then pegging it out more like the bit at the back of the tent, to form a sloped canopy, meaning that we can get into the tent in the rain without the rain getting in.  Do you think this would be possible?

Hi D, oh right, I get you, sorry mine is the newer model so a bit different.   The bit I meant with the elastic is on the roll-back roof which is only on the later model, so sorry can't help you there.

These door porches are not really meant to be left up in the rain, they are more of a sunshade, but from what I have seen on pictures of the early Weathermaster, I think the alteration you suggest could work as you have an additional door underneath that one don't you? I couldnt do this with  mine as the layer underneath the porch door is mesh only.

Hi Elaine,

I'm jealous!  You've got more windows than me!  You're right though, we do have an extra door under the sun shade.  And don't have a roll back roof.

You'll see at the meets anyway - no photos I'm afraid.

Dawn

Hi DandD

I think your tent is like mine, see pic in gallery, i'm sorry but I cant be much help as I haven't yet been away in my tent yet due to wife being disabled but am hoping to get some camping mileage under me belt this year. Best of luck if you gonna go for the conversion idea.

Regards

 Steve.

Hi Steve,

Our tent is almost like yours, but it's only got windows on one side, and no little blue winged bits under the sunshade.  Not sure I'll do the alteration until after one of the meets (just to get everyone else's advice!), also, don't fancy trying to get the tent to the sewing machine at the moment - I'd probably end up cutting off the wrong bit!

It appears the Weathermaster is a bit of a Northern tent - looks like Elaine is the Southerner in here at the moment (ALL the way down there in Sunny Scunny!) - We're only in Beverley, so we're not much further north!

Hi, yeh I've got the later model Weathermaster Plus and I have also used those elastic ties to good effect.

By the way if you don't have those, I've seen small plastic clip on devices intended to create an extra eyelet for groundsheets etc. without piercing the material. A few camping shops sell these and I have found them very useful. if you clip one of these to each corner of the roof section then attatch a rubber "tie down" or even a piece of string to this and then tie to the end poles, it should have have the effect of pulling the roof pieces taught.

By the way, hi to all you other weathermaster owners out there there seem to be quite a few of us!
