Hi everyone,

Hope that some of you could share some of your wisdom and advise us on what tent to buy.

We have agreed to go on a camping holiday to Cornwall with friends this year and require a large family tent.

We have two children boy and girl and they both want their own room.  So Seperate pods are required as a dividing curtain would not work with our rugrats.

We would also like lots of living space and a porch entrance and a back entrance.

I don't want to pay over the top as we might not enjoy camping!

Any recommendations would be greatfully received as the vast choice is giving us a headache.

Simon & Lisa

Sounds like you are talking about the Campus Breckenridge Deluxe....it has all of your requirement in spades. As Campus have now been taken over by Khyam - the new re-badged 2006 tents will be out shortly....if you are quick, you can still pick up a bargain 2005 model which still has the Campus badge. They are exactly the same. I've even seen this fab tent for £170 with Aspinalls (factory 2nds)

Oh and you get SIG with it too. Have a look at my gallery pics.

everyone who has a large family tent will probably recommend their own tent, so here it goes tor a vango diablo 900, great tent. best to have a look around though as you will find one type will suit you more than another

Hi Turners,

Here is my recommendation, the Royal Biarritz 6 which is the same as our Sassari 6 apart from they have added a skylight to the porch and a window to the back door. http://www.worldofcamping.co.uk/shop/SearchResults.asp?search=biarritz You would have to be quick though as they are selling off this coloured tent and replacing it with a green version which will be an extra £100 http://www.jacksons-camping.co.uk/royal/tunnel.htm

If you are not sure whether camping will prove to be your thing in the long term, I would suggest that you check out these bargains to be had from World of Camping here

There are a number of tents with three bedrooms listed there which you could get for a fraction of the usual costs.

You might also want to browse through these boards to pick up on the detailed differences between some of these models (e.g. the pros and cons of sewn in groundsheet models like the Vango Diablo versus the outer-first pitching of the Wynnster Mercury, ease of pitching a tunnel shape like the Aztec Sala or Vango Vista etc)

Good luck with your hunt -and I hope you all find that camping is just THE best kind of hol!

How about the campus indiana 8, for £135 delivered, 2005 model factory 2nds. http://www.caravans-camping.co.uk/70040/info.php?p=7&pno=0&pid=495536&cat=15723&ack=9&search=&sought=

it is a 3 bedroom tunnel style tent, which many people find easier to erect than the domes with the bedroom pods coming off. 1x4berth and 2x2 berths. It has a huge living space and a back door, but no porch.  The 2006 models are about £225.

Thanks for ther reply Claire.

I have seen pictures of the Breckenridge Delux and am very impressed.

Could you tell me please:-

How long the tent takes to erect?

Do you have access to the back door or do oyou have to go through the bedroom as I have seen on some floor plans?

Can you stand up in the bedroom?

Thanks again for the reply, hope you can help out again.

Hi Lisa,

Yes you can stand up in the bedrooms. The Breckenridge Deluxe is almost identical to the Vango Diablo 900 - but in the Diablo, the bedroom pods slope away meaning you can't really sleep 3 in each pod (otherwise the 3rd person is going to have tent an inch from his face!). The Breckenridge has an extra support in each pod, making them extremely roomy.

With regards the doors - you have 3. 2 in the porch (which is huge and perfect for setting all your kitchen stuff up in!)...one door at the front, the other at the side. There is an additional door on one of the bedroom pods. Last summer we opened it up to allow a through-draught as it was boiling hot and it worked a treat. We've never really used it as an entry but you could if you wished, of course, although you would be going through the bedroom. Bearing in mind that you can stand up in the bedroom pods, if you put your 'sleeping stuff' in one of the other pods during the day, there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't use it as your main entry.

Takes us about 40-50 mins to put up properly (all guys pegged out and tightened etc). It did take us over 2 hours on our first attempt, but I think that can be said for most new tents until you've figured out the instructions (I think it took us so long because they had sent us the instructions for the standard version, not the deluxe and I couldn't figure out how to do the extra bedroom pod!) lol.

We did a LOT of shopping around before we settled on this one - but are thoroughly delighted with it.

Let me know if you need any more info...good luck!

Hi - we are also very interested in the Breckenridge Deluxe, but was wondering - Claire - how easy is it to get the flysheet over the top of the inner tent  (2 adults doing it) and have you ever had to put the inner up in bad weather?  We are still unsure how wise it is to get an inner first tent with the British weather being what it is!

Hi,

We've only had to do it in bad weather once - but thankfully we had tried it out a few times by then so it didn't take us too long. It's easy enough to get the flysheet over - I did it myself, but obviously if there are two of you, it will be a whole lot easier!

I don't think the fact that it is inner first would put me off, given that it's such a fab tent. I think I would just hold off pitching for a while - it doesn't rain forever! (famous last words! LOL).

Claire.
