I looked at this tent. I liked it but decided on the monty in the end because it was inner pitched first. and it only had one large bedroom and i wanted two. I am glad i got the monty but did like the gelert it was very airy lots of flaps so to let in the breeze. I have seeen a couple in the flesh not sure if there wasn't one at Go great outdoors in Chester. I did see one at their exhibitions during the summer.
We have been in the utah it is a very dark tent inside dont recall any windows in it at all just two big square rooms if you havent actually seen one up I would try to before you buy one.
have to agree with lynles went in this at a tent expo last summer and found its overall size ok but very claustrophobic due to the lack of windows .personally we camp to get outdoors but this felt .....wrong sorry gelert but you have made a bit of a mess with this one .....it did look very stable though
Ah ha Fogey you beat me to it - I saw an add for the Gelert the other day and had the same thoughts.
We have the Coleman Sahara 4/5 (we bought it from Fogey!) and it is a fantastic tent for the two of us - huge sleeping area and enough space to cook and sit in the front section of it.
BUT - it is quite dark, it's a tent that is made for hot and airy climates and for France and mainland Europe in the summer it is fantastic as you can canopy the sides to give lots of air and to provide shade. In dark and dull Glastonbury in September it was a bit dark and dull sitting inside of it as the rain bucketed down outside!
If you want a sig but want an airy tent for foreign climes then the Sahara is perfect and the Utah looks virtually identical to it.
Once we can afford it we'd like to buy an Outwell Indiana for the end of season/early season UK trips when we're likely to want to sit inside and plus we're not great sig lovers, especially for times when you're likely to come home with a wet tent.
Having said all that, much as I love our Sahara I'm not sure I'd buy the Utah now, it's a lot of money, if I wanted a hot and sunny climate tent I'd buy a canvas frame tent, and for the UK I'd probably want something that has more light coming into it.
The Utah like the Sahara is inner first but TBH the inner on the Sahara is so robust that it doesn't matter if it gets wet whilst pitching and it's so quick to pitch that it's not a huge problem.
I was thinking of buying the Utah 4+4. I know there is a skylight but am confused about any further windows. It is not clear from any of the photos on the web, I phoned Gelert.com and they said there are windows behind the door openings, however, several people on this forum say it is a dark tent with lack of windows.
If any owner of the Utah could give me the definitive answer, I'd be most grateful.
Consider a Gelert Quebec? it is listed as a 8+4 but forget the four it really is a confortable 8 man tent in two big bedrooms. Its good value too and that has big skylights, so much so that during the day we close them to keep the sun/heat out and two large door entries with mesh and fully closing zips that we also keep open. Have a look and see what you think.
