As you live in Kent I would definitely recommend you go and look at Camping International's range of tents in Gillingham.  The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.  You would then be able to see all different sizes and types of tent set up.

Hi diamond 68, i can personally recommend the vancouver 10, for a cheap starter tent for a large family, and so easy to put up, its hard to beat at that price.

also have a look at united british caravans website, in their special offer tents they have previous years model tents at half the price, and  they have some big ones on there . They have a good reputation, lots of members have bought from them online.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to pass on your thoughts. I didn't realise how many tents there were to choose from, but at least we have a better idea of what we're thinking about now.  

I wasn't sure if camping was for us, but everyone is sooo friendly that I'm really keen now...whatever tent we go for.
