A friend of mine wants to take the family camping and looking for a family tent to take him, wife and three children, ages 5 and under. Given the extreme weather we get in summer he wants something that can take a battering. I've a Cabanon Aruba which I've found to be excellent but admit this sort of tent would probably be too heavy and bulky for weekends away. We also have a Wynnster mallard 5 (2004) to compare but definately a summer season tent. My sister has a Khyan rigipole which she raves about. Can anyone recommend a tent that will fit the bill? I'd say budget of £600 max.

We've got a Monty 6... although not been away with it yet... it got quite a battering in the garden the other week... ended up leaving it up all week to dry..
Love the tent... plenty of room... 2 big (3 berth) bedrooms.. easy to put up... bit of a pain to get back in the bag, side rain saver porch for wet shoes and buggies. SIG, so hopefully no bugs!!
With children all under 5 does your friend want to be sleeping next to them/in the next pod/other end of tent?
We have a sunvalley 8 (very weather resilient) and sleep in adjoining compartments (Montana 6 is same in this respect), when 3 year old cried at night I just unzipped and lifted her through for a cuddle without getting out of my sleeping bag. I wouldn't want to be a few metres away but some prefer this.
Both the Montana and the Sunvalley are quite heavy/bulky but that is due to strong poles/very waterproof.
sorry but the sun valley and monty are completely different ,the monty has a steel pole structure and the SV has fibreglass poles ,the sunvalley is waaaay too wibbly wobbly in strong winds ,if you want stability go for steel poles !
Thanks for the replies. Like the Montana as the whole family is together rather than isolated bedrooms off a main living room.
Often people advise to buy a cheap tent initially then get something better if they enjoy it. My mate's logic is to buy the best you can afford because if the cheapo tent snaps/leaks/blows away there is no chance he'll ever convince his wife to go camping again. That was my opinion for buying a Cabanon. Did prove expensive once the annex, sun canopy and madatory trailer to carry the whole thing was bought but despite all weathers my wife still enjoys camping.

I wasn't suggesting they were the same! (be a bit pointless Outwell selling two tents the same). I was saying they weigh about the same (34.5Kg and 34.1Kg) and they both have the same sleeping arrangement (except for SV8 extra pod).
The Sv8 might be a bit wibbly but very secure and in even high winds we've had no problems and the inner bedrooms don't seem to move about. I assumed the wibblyness is better than presenting a solid immoveable wall to the wind (like the Millenium bridge (bad example perhaps) - but I'm no engineer these days so what do I know - just a housewife and (family!) expedition planner.
Must say, Montana was my first choice but OH wasn't convinced about sown in groundsheets so the SV8 is our compromise/best of both worlds. They both have the same waterproof rating!
Most families of three or more children like your friend seem to go for the Montana 12 not 6. You wouldn't be fitting 3 airbeds in the 180cm 3-person sleeping space. We fit our children in (we have 3 kids too) but they are on mats and we tend to settle one child in the SV8's extra sleeping "pod".
monty range with its layout lots of living space, and the pods can be 3x3 or just one big 6, easy put up and stays up
with its 5000hh you wont get wet and its venting system cuts out condensation.

Lots and lots of weekend tent options for family of 5 for £600, in fact lots of good options for £200!
They need to look at some erected an decide which style they would prefer - Outwell, Vango, Wynnster, Coleman, Campus/Kyham, Royal all do tents that fit the bill.

What is it about the Indian that no one seams to take notice of it! it has the steel poles of the Montana range but without the sewn in ground sheet. plus it come in 8 man with two beedrooms next to each othe and one that you can add in. I have 3 kids under 6 and this is the tent we are hoping to get when we have some money. Take a look on outweel website
We have a khyam espace (2003 model) for sale as we've upgraded to a trailer tent. This withstood a fantastic storm in Wales. When other tents were flooded and battered by the winds we were nice and cosy.
