Hi,

We're looking to get away without the hookup in our tent next year. We do like to read for a couple of hours after it gets dark.

Can anyone suggest a lamp (Gas or electric), that provides sufficient light for that period of time? Is Gas or Rechargeable leccy the way to go?

Cheers

We use an Osram battery light which has a remote control with it, we put it on the hook of the roof of the sleeping area so that we can read in bed then turn it off using the remote control next to us therefore not having to get up in the cold, also useful for those very early morning calls to the toilet!

For a bright, directed , hands free beam of light for any purpose I'd recommend a headtorch. Ideal for reading. MT

We have a big lamp with dual flourescent tubes but it is quite heavy on batteries

For reading at night, my choice is a little LED light which I shove between my pillows.

But we also have the windup ones which I beleive are better for the environment though not sure how ling the charge lasts

Best book light I've used is the Lightwedge:

http://www.lightwedge.net/

Its like reading in daylight even if the surrounding area is pitch black. They aren't cheap but if you do a lot of reading at night they are worth every penny.

Kleeneze or Betterware or other such suppliers sell little book lights that clip onto the top of your book.  See this one.  OH and I both use them and they work like a dream.

I use a NitePalm Field Light. Its not cheap but is excellent. It has 5 settings from bright to light the whole tent (gives 180 degrees of light) to dim for use as a night light. The battery 4AA bateries will last about 10 hours+ on the brightest setting and upto 60 hours on the dim setting. We find it perfect for camping and use it for reading in the evenings. You can hang it and it also comes with a base for a table top or the ground.

Sounds very useful, but it looks <ahem> rather dubious  I wouldn't want to drop that and have it roll to the next pitch!
