Sorry to double-post (I have just posed this question on another thread, but wondered if it might make for interesting response as a question in it's own right):

I wonder why Outwell use the really heavy, steel poles on the polyester tents (we have all read the pitching dilemmas with the Monty's) and alloy poles on the almost identical (but heavier, polycotton) 'Lakes'?

Okay, before you all shout "Cost!", don't you think it would stimulate interest if the ever-popular Montana and Indiana ranges were supplied with the lightweight (and thus more easy to handle) alloy frame; even if at an additional cost option?

shopping for a new tent lead me to our local towsure. at that time i was still humming and haring.girl on counter said something about alloy not being as strong as steel. pehaphs the bigger tents need stronger poles?

i think (imo) that the bear lake has alloy poles because of the weight issue, if it was supplied with steel poles the combined weight would be pretty hefty (frame tent proportions) as we all want the best tent with the lightest weight, and smallest pack size (and best price) so would make it less desirable

i like having steel poles on the monty though, i like the stability they provide for the tent and if i had a choice of steel of alloy (at a cost) i would still choose steel
