My wife and I started camping last year at the age of 50, and we love it. Been novices we bought a tent off the PC and we have had 6 good holidays from it, the tent cost £40 a 4 man tent but not very tall. Any how we have decided to get a bigger better tent plenty of room and hight because I am six foot tall. would any of you experianced campers be able to recommend a good roomy tent for tall people costing about £250, any feed back would be appreciated, wished we had done this years ago. Happy camping.

David and Jenny

SIG or non-SIG? And do you want a porch/two seperate pods so you can use one for storage/lots of inside living space/easy erect/headroom throughout sleeping area?

Have to say, for £250 you`ll have a LOT of choice of roomy tents for two. If Hubby and I were buying a tent just for us though we`d still probably pick our Vango TBS Oregon 600 out of the non-SIG line up though. Very sturdy, doddle to put up, lots of room in the bigger sleeping pod throughout and a choice of using either the small pod for storage in wet weather or poleing the end out in hot weather.

Hello there. This is a good time of year to get a bargain, and your budget should get you lots of tent. As Val says, there are some basic decisions to be made about what will suit your needs....This comes up often so here is my standard list of things to consider;

1. Man made fabrics are much lighter and dry off quickly, but they cause condensation, and degrade in the sun so they don't last as long as cotton. Cotton canvas is more expensive, and bulky, but creates a comfortable climate to live in as it is breathable, and is not so badly affected by UV so it will alst 20+ years. You should be able to find good second hand frame tents (or small new ones) in your price range. Some makers have now created poly-cotton tents (to try and get the best of both) but these are costly and are mostly sold out right now.

2. Poles can be of fibre glass (light cheap but prone to splitting in high winds) so these are sometimes reinforced by an outer wrapping of woven fibres (trade name is Durawrap). Metal poles (steel or aluminium) are obbviously stronger, but heavier (esp steel). Metal alloy ppoles offer the best strength to weight ratio, and are flexible like fibreglass.Alloy poles tend to be reserved for tents used in extremes-mountain/winter activities, though Robens do some family sized tents with this technology (the "Dreamer " range) but again I think they are outside your budget.

3. As Val says, you also need to think about whether you want a fully sewn in groundsheet throughout the tent; most tents with this style go up inner first, which can leave you a bit vulnerable when putting up/taking down in wet weather e.g. Outwell Harford, Vango Diablo, Khyam/Campus Brekonridge. Some makers have now addressed this by producing models that go up outer first AND have SIG -e.g. Outwell Montana and Nebraska, Wynnster Pegasus. And some makes have created a different compromise with the "riser" groundsheet, which is loose but rises up the sides ofthe inner to cut out draughts.

Tents without a SIG are usually a bit lighter in overall weight, have the advantage of going up outer first, it is easy to separate a muddy GS and clean it at home. But there can be problems with creepy crawlies coming through the gap between flysheet and GS, and draughts, tho these are lessened if the tent has draught flaps/mudwall/valance along the bottom of the flysheet. You can get a separate footprint GS to go under SIG tents, to protect the SIG from soiling.

4. Tent shape and layout. Tunnels are usually the easiest shape to put up, but you need to make sure you guy up properly as they rely on guying for stability  more than dome or frame shapes do. Domes can vary according to how the bedrooms are laid out (You might want to think about this if you are sometimes going to have guests with you...privacy etc). Frame tents give excellent head height throughout, and sometimes have a proper plastic-lined kitchen area inside too.

5. Overall pack size and weight of tent is important, depending on transport and storage facilities at your disposal, and how much other stuff you take. Frame tents tend to be heaviest and bulkiest, and those made from manmade materials are lighter and smaller.

So....if you have not fallen asleep yet...here are a few to think about that are in your price range.

Tunnels with riser groundsheets - Vango Oregon, Outwell Oregon 5 and Casagrande XL.

Tunnels with SIG&outer first - Outwell Montana, Outwell Nebraska (tunnel dome hybrid) Sunncamp Vario range, Coleman Columbus

Domes with SIG and inner first - Vango Diablo, Outwell Hartford, Khyam/Campus Breckonridge

Domes with loose GS& outer first - Vango Colorado, Wynnster Mercury

Domes with outer first and SIG - Wynnster Pegasus.

I have done a quick seach and all of these are in your price range. They are all 4,5 or 6 berth, as this provides for stand up height and plenty of storage space for longer hols.

I can't help much with frame tents , but I am sure someone will be along with advice on frame tents for 2 at £250.

Good luck with the hunt!

Hi jenpen may I be the first to welcome you to UKCS a most addictive website. Foggers has supplied a great deal of advice to you. We like you started our camping with a cheap tent and had s few years of great camping with it. We to have enjoyed it so much and have now upgraded. We wanted a good sized tent like yourself and after much deliberation settled for the Aztec Cantera 9 which you can pick up for in the sales for less than £200. We have had no issues with leaks or poor quality with this tent. Only two of us and can put this dome tent up in 40 minutes complete. We have a bedroom for us, one for the dog and the third for storage. But I would suggest that you guys make a list of your Personal requirements and then narrow the tents down to those that fulfill your requirements. Beware though, some Outwell tents this year have suffered from some quality issues and some of the tents are not up to scratch, plenty of posts on here re Outwell.

I don't have any technical advice for you but I would definitely recommend that you go and see the tents you like erected.  We totally changed our mind about our first choice when we walked into it.

I would second this. We were all for buying the Nebraska XXL but when we saw it 'in the flesh' it just didnt do anything for me.

That said, I've pre-ordered a new 2007 Outwell Vermont XL and haven't seen it. Slightly different in that I had the Outwell Montana 12 and they are practically the same apart from the layout.

How about the Monty 4 or 6 (Outwell Montana 4 or 6)? Easy to erect, full SIG and plenty of space. They haven't had any quality control issues to speak of unlike their larger brother the Monty 12.

I can't help much with frame tents , but I am sure someone will be along with advice on frame tents for 2 at £250.

Advantages of frame tents, as Foggers says, no condensation problems. Canvas is breathable, so it's not like an oven inside when the weather is hot. If it's pouring down with rain or very windy, you can cook inside a frame tent. Full standing height in every part of the tent. Lots of windows so you don't feel cut off from the rest of the world in bad weather.

The only disadvantage in our opinion is that they take up more room in the car. We use a small frame tent (13'x10'2 five berth) for weekends, and this fits in the car fine with all the rest of our camping gear for just the two of us. For main holidays we use a large 6 berth, but find that with a larger tent we tend to take more equipment, so we need the trailer.

If there are just the two of you, a frame tent no larger than 13 foot square should fit in your car with the rest of the equipment (unless you've got a very small car).

For the comfort factor, we feel that a frame tent is well worth having. You can pick up some second hand bargains, even at this time of year. Frame tents last 25-30 years, so it's quite okay to buy a ten year old frame tent.

Hello David and Jenny

I don't know if you really want a frame tent, bear in mind that canvas is extremely heavy and the steel poles are heavy too. If I were you, I'd have a look on Khyam's website Khyam at their QE tents which are easy and quick (well worth looking at the videos if you have broadband) or if they're a little expensive try the P&S tents. I have to confess to being biased though.

Myself and my husband are thankful for your replies and each one is helpful, if not a bit confusing to novices, any how we are of to Egypt Sunday for a week, 5 star all inclusive and about 80 degrees so you see if we seem a bit apathetic this sis the reason. when we come back we will be reading your Emails and let you know about the tent we purchased. We want a 5/6 berth for the room and not really for 5/6 people. Talk soon, once again thanks for the response.
