Hi there,
We want to buy a family tent and don't know where to start looking, am only really familiar with Vango and don't really know much about them! Also does anyone know any good places where we could view them. We live in Fleet Hampshire

Hi JonesL, before we can help you need to provide us with a little more info. How many of you are in the family ? Budget ? Prefered layout of bedrooms (ie side by side, great for young family. Opposite great for teenagers etc)

Hi there,

I've just purchased the new Vango Diablo 600 xp (black 'n' mercury). Were a family of 3, with a little girl. This tent is absolutely huge, and is very spacious. With 2 bedrooms and a very large living area. This tent sleeps 6 people, but could easily sleep 10, if you include the living area.

It's RRP is £350.00, but we paid £255.00 delivered from a website called Allweathers. Here's the link if you are interested

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.allweathers.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=870

Allweathers seems to be very reasonably priced for all their camping gear!!!

Hope you enjoy. :)

Hi

We are a family of 3 but like lots of space, would like bedrooms to be side to side. Not too worried about money really, just want a great tent that won't take all day to put up!!!

Cheers for any advice and tips

Hi Cheyner83

Thanks for link, just having a look now, we have a little girl who has just turned 2. Had a weekend camping last Aug
in Kent, and it was ok but i think this year will be better.

Have a look at the first section in this thread, it may help with a few tips on choosing a tent.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=3&TopicID=94074&PagePosition=6

As for tent makes, this is a previously compiled list which may help:

Commonly available (UK) tents, with established reputations are:

  • Cabanon
  • Easycamp
  • Coleman
  • Gelert
  • Kyham/Campus
  • Outwell
  • Relum
  • Sunncamp
  • Vango
  • Wynnster

Less common and specialist brands, but still with established reputations:

  • Aztec
  • Quest/Basecamp
  • Eureka
  • Force Ten
  • Heidelberg
  • Jack Wolfskin
  • Jamet
  • Lichfield
  • Blue Diamond/Outdoor Revolution
  • Messager
  • Marechal
  • Microfast
  • Nordic Outdoor
  • North Face
  • Quechua
  • Robens
  • Royal
  • Terra Nova
  • Vaude
  • Wild Country

Then there are some established shop brands, including:

  • Blacks (Blacks)
  • Eurohike (Millets)
  • Peakland (Yeomans)
  • ProAction (Argos)
  • Attwoolls (Attwoolls)

The there are some imported tents, which are not normally retailed in the UK - so support like repair and relacements might be an issue, but generally they get, depending on the tent, good to excellent comments on here:

  • Coleman US
  • DeWaard
  • Karsten
  • Kelty
  • Ransted
  • Skandika

.. and then finally there are the famed too-good-to-be true, direct from tat-land, Ebay "specials", which are to be avoid like an unexploaded bomb in a fireworks factory.

As for places near Fleet, there is a placing Camping Wolrd I think, possibly similar name, down near Frensham Pools (nr Farnham) - they usually have a good display.

Nice tent (now, if only it didn't have those silly window canopies   I might even think of getting one myself!).

Here's a question: does anyone actually like those Vango window canopies, or find them remotely useful?

Hi

Leisure fayre of Lyndhurst in the New Forest can't be too far from you, Towsure have a huge shop in Southampton. Both did have tents on display.

Good luck.

It's a shame you don't live closer to me as my outwell colorado 5 would suit you well. They don't do it anymore it's been replaced by the indiana (I think) but we have had it for 18 months and it goes up in less than 30 mins and has withstood pretty torrential rain with no leaks. the bedroom pods are separate but next to each other (3 berth and 2 berth) the living room is big and I have also got front canopy for it. I need to sell my gear to put towards having the bike rack fitted on my motorhome and other bits we need.

Hi
Have been looking at the aspen on the vango website and my hubby pointed out that you put the inside up first. Depending on the british weather and how long it takes to put up, this tent may not be a great idea.

What about the Outwell Bear Lake? It has two bedroom inners, side by side, one is huge so you could easily have your little girl in with you if you wanted, then give her her own bedroom when she gets a bit bigger.

This is a good quality, polycotton tent, with thick zipped in groundsheet (so it can be removed to clean, or if you prefer to have grass underfoot, or just for additional ventilation when required); good sized living area and zip on front canopy included. It has both side and front doors, so ventilation / pitching options are well catered for. The aluminium frame should make it easier to handle than steel.

Not the cheapest, but it should last for a long while and provide a comfortable base.
