The Horseshoe Pass is not half as scary as Hardknott, but lovely as well. Sometime I want to drive along the Long Causeway, which goes over the moors from Hebden Bridge to Burnley, anyone done this one and is it worth it?

Horseshoe Pass is not scary Romaway.Not ideal for towing perhaps. Just like driving over a hill a couple of tight bends,no big drops or anything.I think there was a landslide that closed it for a while and they did some improvements to it if my memory is correct.(might have dreamt it) Put it this way I have been over it in a lorry delivering 16 ton of beet pulp.

Took this route by chance Oct 07 in a camper van.

Follow A470 north from Dolgellau when you get to Bronaber turn right & take mountain road over towards Bala.

You have to keep opening & closing gates (look out for stray sheep),(well it is Wales) but it was a lovely drive very scenic.

We went up the pass of the cattle or Bealach na Ba in our campervan. It doesn't seem that bad from the passenger seat. Numerous 180 degree hairpins on up to 1 in 3 gradients makes for an interesting drive to say the least.

At the top we stopped to make a drink and got chatting to another couple in a camper who were going to wildcamp there in the carpark, we were staying at the CC site in Kinlochewe.

It is a beautiful area. We saw a Pinemartin by a river near the site.

  I would recommend Hartside top, on the road from Penrith to Alston. A fantastic view from the top (on a clear day you can see from the Scottish Border to the Lake District) and a decent cafe there too/ The road isn't too bad, one or two tight corners near the top on Penrith side but not too bad.

This is making me itch to get out on my motorbike!

Never done the Applecross road, it is on my "must do" list.  Honister, Wrynose & Hardknott are excellent, as is the Hartside road.  If you don't want hairpins with shear drops, you could try a drive from Hexham to Blanchland - Stanhope - Barnard Castle - Reeth - Leyburn.  All spectaculer.  Mostly deserted with only you & the sheep.  Any part of the route is a joy.
