Hi Glyn.
Vignetting is an effect where the brightness or colour saturation drops off at the corners of the photograph. It can be a problem when using lenses other than those designed for the camera - and with the Nikon series there are dozens available. With regard to filters, immediately put a UV filter on the front of the lens. This can help when taking distant photographs which are a little misty. However, the main reason is that the filter may cost you £10 - a generous guess - if it gets scratched whereas a new lens is likely to be 10 times that.

Most of the other filters you can buy are easily replicated in a good image editing programme such as Photoshop. However, this is very expensive and a very steep learning curve. Photoshop Elements is said to contain most of the basic needs of its big brother and comes a lot cheaper. If you are serious about photography SEE HERE. I believe it costs around £50.

Vignetting is when the edges of the lens can be seen in the image. This is mainly caused when using a lens designed for the digital sensor in most DSLR's on a full frame camera (or is it the other way around, I can never remember).

If you look at my website www.markanthonyphotography.co.uk

go to the architecture page which is in the personal section, click on the bottom middle church. This is an example of vignetting. You will see that the corners are darker.

Hope you have fun with your camera

Nice choice Glyn hope you enjoy as much as I did before I turned professional LOL.

Still enjoy my personal stuff just weddings are becoming much of a muchness. Recently got into COLOURED infrared and the fun has started again. Used to do black and white infrared with a 35mm

You'll be getting a tripod next and learning how to lock the mirror up to ensure a perfectly sharp image with long exposures.

Good Luck
