Haven't read it all but my 2 pennorth:

Avoid Argos, The Range etc like the plague. Don't buy starter kits (or any kit for that matter), it's usually substandard and lasts 5mins before breaking and putting the kids off for ever.

Get down to your local tackle shop and ask for some help. Best to start with a whip, basically a rod without a reel. The line attaches to the tip, you buy kits with line, float, hook and shot attached. All you need to do is attach it to the tip, pop a maggot (sorry but they are the best bait for what your kids will be looking to catch, silver fish like roach and rudd). They will also need a disgorger to get the hooks out, a few spare pole rigs for when they put the floats up trees etc, bait box and a seat.

No need for keepnets etc, all they are likely to catch is small stuff so it really needs to go straight back. Same as they won't need rods or reels to start with, it makes it too complex when all they need to do is catch a few fish to ignite a spark. The rest of it can come later when they are ready to move on if that's how they want to go.

Have a look at: ALL THINGS PISCATORIAL It's a website that advises of local angling coaches who will be able to help you out and point the kids in the right direction to begin with.

All the replies are sound and this just my outlook on this, if your children want a rod and reel, you will need to keep in mind space in the car so going for a 12‘ 2 piece carp rod will be no good.

Brands such as Shakespeare can provide smaller rods that can do an adequate job in various lengths for various techniques.

I picked up a Shakespeare set reduced heavily to £3.99, chucked all the nonsense lures and hooks away ( safely), purchased decent hooks, floats, ledgering bombs, shot, etc for about £10.00

So ended up with a

6' rod, reel and small tackle box ......ok so they are not great but for a young boy trying it out for the first time, not watching where he stands, understanding how to cast, it is ideal and throw away at the price.

First session this week in a shallow and fairly clear river (not ideal) he caught with my help 12 chub, 5 minnows, 2 roach, 1 grayling and 2 brown trout all small except for the grayling that was on the large side but didn‘t have my scales, each one was as enjoyable to catch as the next one.

Google "float rigs" "leger rigs" and "fishing knots” you can print them off to remind you how to set up the end/terminal tackle.

Some advice from your local tackle shop on the terminal tackle will be important and ask how to unhook, handle and return the fish back safely.

My advice is not to buy "cheap" just inexpensive tackle, they can go further later on with mind blowing prices for rods, reels etc.

hi there had same problem myself last year, i'd recomend buying whips as they are cheap, between 1-20 pounds and buy ready made poll rigs at about 1.00 each ,these are a varied length of line complete with float hook and shot all ready assembled and ready to use , you can buy a landing net and pole for around the 10 pound mark. bait wise maggots are the best allrounder but bread, sweetcorn, gardenworms or processed meats like polony, luncheon meat and petfood are all good too,so for around 10-20 pounds per person ur set up and fish in the margins (up to 10ft from the lake edge) for most types of fish. as reguards liciense you can buy day liciense from post office about 3.75 a day for adults not sure, but its nation fishing month 17/07-15/08 so if one of your party has a full liciense go and buy the rest of your group "Anglers mail weekley" as their is a free one day rod liciense in those at mo 1.80 for mag plus some usefull tips and usually some free gift attatched take towel and chairs too, discorgers bout 50p have fun, if you like it you can always use the whips again if not you havent lost a lot just what it would cost you to wander round a tourist attraction for the day
