If a farmer has a bull over 10 months but doesn't want him in with the cows does that mean the poor animal has to be shut in a shed, and can't go in a field?

Seems a bit rotten for the poor bull.

In my experience most bulls are pretty placid and generally can't be bothered.  I know there are always exceptions but how many people are actually injured by bulls?

I live in a small village in Somerset and personally know of two farmworkers who are now crippled and of one who died from his injuries within a 10 mile radius of the village.

I encountered one field in Anglesey with a faded sign to this effect but fortunately no bull. I saw plenty of cows who generally looked either annoyed that I was disturbing them, or bored that yet another crazy human was wandering through their ranks. Generally I think the problem would have been that with a heavy rucksack on my back (and having walked anything up to 20 miles a day on that trip) I couldn't have managed more than a fast waddle if anything had chased me!

My walking companion was injured by a bull's horn only this week. We had come across a few lovely bullocks in a shelter and they came over for a pat on their nosey, curly heads. Only problem was that friend's hand got caught between the metal gate and the horn!

Still he can honestly boast that he was nearly gored by a bull on our last walk!

An H&SE information sheet is available here.

Anything that makes a loud noise will shoo the cattle away so it might be worth having an portable air horn in your ruck sack.

If you need to shoo cattle away always hold your arms out as if to make yourself as big as possible. Cattle only see the extremities and think you are larger than you are. Also let go of any dogs on leads as they may be the cause of the cattle being aggressive.

woh there!   dont start advising people to start with AIR HORNS and letting dogs off near stock.  a footpath is exactly that a footpath! its for getting from A to B and the land owner has every right to earn a living from his or her land. if you can see the stock think and ask yourself is there another way ? walk around the boundry if you can and keep all dogs on leads cattle and horses will chase loose dogs. they will at most times follow dogs on a lead. just keep the dog close. if they do surround you and its a last resort and only if the dog is not agressive let it loose so you can escape then call it to you.

another person has said RUN never do it more people are killed running from stock than facing them.

they are only wanting to know who you are ! its their home you are visiting.  I had a person years ago walk a dog off a lead here and it chased my animal into a wire fence. when I tackled him he started on about right to roam and the horses should not be in the meadow. ended in a punch up. he was not seen again !  and I was left with satisfaction plus a vets bill.

Oh well it goes to show look dont touch!  a small price to pay when you see what can happen.  had a cow lean on me once it was just showing it was relaxed in my company. hurt like hell though. I was pinned between it and the pen wall. as the bugger walked of she stood on me foot.

Last year we came across three cows on a narrow part of the Cornish S.W.Coast Path, just where the cliff side dropped away, it got a little scary when we passed them as they jostled each other for space, that wasn't a very nice experience. It was a choice of either getting past them, or walking a long way back.

Grazing Cattle are calmer than those just stood around in a group not doing much, last year again in Cornwall we had to cross a field with a group of about thirty ( looking for mischief cows),had a feeling they wern't going to stay put for long. They walked quickly towards us, we walked faster, knowing we shouldn;t run,by the time we jumped over a barbed wire fence they were in full charge towards us.Not knowing much about cows, am not sure how they would of reacted if we had turned around and faced them.?

What's he like with pigs ( happy bonzo ?)

We were following a public footpath on our new OS map, the footpath crossed  a field which contained  one of the biggest pigs we'd ever seen, and he had his eye on us, we didn't fancy being chased by that huge pig or getting muddy,  it also looked like 'private property' and had no 'public footpath' sign post up. We eventually found  another way out of the field we were in,( after going round it twice, as you do.) We came out onto a busy main road, which we were trying to avoid, we turned down the next side road, then came apon the other side of the Pig field, and there we saw the 'public' right of way sign post pointing straight back across the Pig Field,(our short cut) we couldn't believe it,  (and there was that great BIG pig looking at us again.)

Not knowing much about pigs (and this one was no piglet) would it have been safe to cross his pen ?

Are there any rules reguarding  rights of ways across Pig Pens?

Di and Jeff.

Looked at your Pig Hunting on utube, happy bonzo and yes I agree you would've been banned, it wasn't very nice. Could put you off Pork for life.

Glad to see you too wouldn't take chances with pigs either, still can't believe that the Public Footpath went straight through the Pig field.

Di and Jeff.
