Not only are people really that stupid on the causeway they put their kids/dogs at risk as well. I've lost count of the times it's been on the local news with the car almost submerged and the occupants either standing on the vehicle roof or on the observation/rescue point. It really is ridiculous but there it is, people are really stupid. In my opinion they should be made to pay for the rescue and insurance should be banned for a long time, I then think people would think twice if it hit them hard in the pocket.

I total agree with you, other people are then putting their lives at risk or taking up time when they could be helping others.

For Holy Island or Lindisfarne on smaller but equally lovely scale visit St Mary's Island at Whitley Bay. It also has a causeway that covers twice a day and a lighthouse. Our kids absolutely loved it there when they were younger and the dogs too. A day on the rocks under the lighthouse and then back across the short causeway to watch the tide cover the path over from the mainland, and also watching the few fools who end up having to wade through the water. This is a footpath rather than a road like Holy Island. One of my favourite places when we visit Northumberland.

The island that St. Marys' is built on is called 'Bait Island'.

Just a pub quiz question for ya.

Only because we live about 3 - 4 miles away from it.

The only thing missing in Northumberland is decent weather, but there again if we had hot sunshine we'd be over-run with tourists. Only joking about the tourists as everyone should give the area a try and then come back for a longer stay and spend more money.
I'm Newcastle born and bred with all early years holidays spent as away days in the Northumberland countryside, I then married and eventually went to live in North Yorkshire before moving to Mallorca for 12 years. When we returned home & bought a caravan we sited it in North Yorkshire only 5 miles from where we had lived but the call of home was just too much so we have just bought a static in Gods County (in my opinion) and couldn't be happier.

Agreed that the water passing over the causeway on Holy Island is an amazing site - but also watch the opening times of the shops & cafes.

We took the kids last year and all the shops (especially my favourite that sells incense sticks) were closed about an hour before the high tide!

Also, on the main road to Holy Island, on the junction with the A1, there is a fabulous pub. Do a good ploughmans!

Well we're home. Northumberland is indeed a very Beautiful place! As per usual we ran out of time to do everything we wanted to do so a return trip is on the cards!

We went to Alnwick, a tad pricy day out at £66 a family of 4. Although we did get a years ticket to the castle (of course we'll be going back!) I was a bit disappointed with the gardens if I'm honest but a few others have said they enjoyed them. I think a visit at a different time of the year would be better maybe. The poison garden kept our boys riveted and the fountains were lovely.

National Trust membership came in handy for a trip to Housesteads, Cragside and Wallington! Love a good National Trust property day out, kids always have something to do and I enjoy the history (and a good old nosy hahah)

We walked up to a couple of lovely waterfalls, Hareshaw Linn and High Force. Strolled around Kielder Water and enjoyed the Keilder drive on a wet day!

By far the families favourite day out was to Beamish. We ate fish and chips in the mining village. Had a beer in the pub in the village, ate biscuits from the bakers and sweets from the confectioners! Rode on an old tram, train, bus and a lovely set of Gallopers, Bliss!

The downside to the trip was the campsite or rather the people on the campsite. out of the ten nights stay we managed one or two nights undisturbed sleep. We had families arguing, families getting rolling drunk and partying, new arrivals getting excited on their first night and being noisy, families playing music, families with a television on way way too loud. (i'm not a miserable cow honestly) the site wardens did their best (at times) but most just turned the music up again/continued arguing once they'd gone! my oh my it's a trip we won't forget in a while!

Add to this the Rain, wind, a deflated airbed and cool temperatures! we've bought a caravan lol

Please come back. Northumberland is the best. Everything you mentioned was either people being in the wrong or prices. I agree prices are over the top but unfortunately they are in line with the rest of the country. As for fellow campers, enough said, I think if people cannot keep their problems to themselves they should stay home & loud music/television should not be tolerated. My hubby is pretty deaf so we used earphones which were great. We bought a tourer after a very wet holiday in Yorkshire, sited it for 5 years, and have never been happier than we are at the moment in our 18 year old static on a site with no facilities, costing a lot less than our seasonal pitch for the same facilities.

Oh Marilyn! we'll be back!!! We had a lovely time just had the edge taken off it for us by inconsiderate people!

The site was a 'drive' from most places we wanted to visit so I don't think we'll try there again. I'd love to see the lighthouse at Whitley bay and some of the other 'costal' attractions.

I'll try and add some pictures soon :)

Hi Sarah, I'm so pleased you enjoyed your holiday, but unfortunately I don't think there are any campsites close to the magnificent St Mary's Island so your going tohave a drive to get there but it will be worth it. If I were you I'd look North as there are a lot of sites further up the coast but inland I'd recommend Highburn House in Wooler. Good luck and keep us informed of your next visit.

We don't mind driving, we drove a lot this holiday! But places like St Marys Island were just that bit too far with two children who aren't so keen on driving! I wanted to go to Seahouses but that was a 3 hour round trip with whinge and moan lol

Highburn House looks lovely! We've bought loads of OS maps for the area and of course have a couple of free days at Alnwick & Beamish to return to! I think we'll come back in May/June, hope fully be able to get out to see some puffins too!
