As a west coaster I must admit I'm biased but I'm another one who says don't forget Galloway. A favourite spot for me.

Well, if we ever manage to get away (more on that elsewhere) we are hopefully off up to Scotland in next day or so for 3 weeks tour. A few years since we've been so long overdue. (Cannot believe the number of folk you mention it to who have never been!)
We like the islands & have been to the Uists, Benbecular, Harris & Lewis, and we really love Orkney (so much so we seriously considered moving there at one time). But apart from popping across to Skye by bridge we can't afford the ferry fares this time so will stay on mainland.
We tend to prefer the highlands and the west coast, and the far north, although I'd quite like to visit Kintyre which we've not been to before (had to cancel a previous trip up there). Not sure about the east side - don't know it so not sure if there's owt for us.
The whole trip was supposed to be for a month to celebrate our silver wedding anniversay (seemed appropriate to be in Stirling on the day!) But so far been cut down to 3 weeks, hopefully won't be further delayed. The dragon will be writing a travel blog as we go. Trying to decide which way to turn when we get to Edinburgh (we don't use M6 route, we always go up the eastern route M1/A1, A68). As you see we don't tend to plan in too much detail.

Plans? schmanns! Our last driving trip abroad we planned to go to Colmar and onto the Black Forest. Planned the route, the sites and the places of interest to visit. Didnt do any of it. Kept driving down to Bavaria, across to Austria and into the Czech Republic on the way back. Best holiday ever!
With you on that one feeblecat. Hate booking campsites, prefer to decide where to go and stop as the mood takes us - perfect for a motorcaravan.
When we were kids, mum & dad would just load up the caravan then get to the main road and then decide whether to turn left or right. And many nights would be spent on lay-bys (mind you there was a lot less traffic about then, it seldom used to continue through the night and would usually stop by about 2am) - they often used to set off in the middle of the night.
http://www.northcoast500.com/home.aspx - the new North Coast 500 route, a loop from Inverness to the north west, far north and north east. This has to be one of the most helpful websites I've seen - loads of ideas on itineraries, and masses of information about what to see & do from beaches to paintball, from whale watching to golf, waterfalls to accommodation. I'm very impressed - interactive map too, App soon.
