We have just had bank holiday weekend in York. We went to the National Railway Museum it was FREE, we didnt use there car park, but the carpark that belongs to the railway, and runs along side the museum, it cost £2.50 for 24 hours. We also went to York Dungons and booked online and saved 40% from or ticket price, then took a packed lunch and sat along the river. It was wonderful.

We are also members of the National Trust, the kids love it, so many places to visit when we are camping, plus they do a lot more for the kids now, so they get involved when looking around the houses, also a lot have kids play areas.

We also use Tesco vouchers for days out, and just used some to book our ferry for the IOW saved us £145.

Not free but not rip off prices - South Lakes Wild Animal Park at Dalton in Furness (Cumbria) - and a brilliant day out. It has been free entry for everyone for the last two winters (Nov-Feb)
Lots of lakes and countryside to roam about up here for free

Sherwood Forrest(Notts) is a free day out
Leeds Armouries?

We loved RAF Cosford and it was free when we went. The car park costs but think it was only £2.50 for the day

Here's Enjoy England's top 10 free days out and on a budget days out

Have you tried a site called Deal Monster for vouchers/deals or even Groupon (they sometimes have good deals on)

We use Tesco vouchers. We also love Cosford, and Coventry Car museum is a MUST!!

We keep an eye on offers such as National Trust on a special offer on Quidco so we got money back for buying membership.

Otherwise, we do walks through forest, nature/sculpture trails. Beach days when lucky enough with the weather. We like finding a stream and spending a day playing in it with our crocs on!!

Clumber Park in Notts (National Trust) costs about a fiver for a car and however many passengers are in it. There is cycle hire, miles and miles of walks, an adventure playground, courtyard with shops/refreshments. Word of warning though, the ice-creams from the various vans are quite expensive, better off to buy one from the tearoom.

I would second the NT membership as value for money. It costs less for a family for a year than one visit to Alton Towers and the like.

just thought of a few more free ones last time we went
national mining museum
yorkshire sculpture park both close together
whitby museum i think there's a small charge but a brill museum
brighton museum   was good
sherwood pines nr edwinstowe adventure play areas for 1--12yrs cyclehire or take your own miles of area to suit all sorts of cyclist or walkers refreshments toilets picnic areas   also go ape for those who want that sort of thing very popular with familys and groups in heart of sherwood we ha a week at coventry /birmingham last year and found a lot of museums some pay some free from motors motorcycles /culture

as some ones mentioned railway museum at york i just loved it there and for free . quite a lot at york but at a cost , free art museum . we tried for the first time a weekend in our camper to elvaston steam rally meet with the uk campsite group and really enjoyed it the entrance fees was in with the price of camping about £42 for week end for the unit loads to see and keep everyone entertained what a brill week end . these all depend on where you are based and take on board the cost of fuel and what you can get the children interested in . if you can gat a free trip in between the pay ones it helps the money last and tell you the truth the free ones can give as much pleasure if not more.
