My girlfriend and I will be going to Keswick later this month. We had planned to bring our mountain bikes with us using a bike rack.
How suitable is the Lake District for cycling? We don't really want to go up and down fells, just a gentle cycle around the area.
We have a healthy respect for my wellbeing, and we're just worried that all the narrow roads in the Keswick will be busy and a little dangerous for cycling.
Most of the reasonably flat roads wind between the hills and are extremely busy. Why not attempt one the many *passes*. The Hardknot Pass springs to mind but be prepared to get off and walk your bike up the hill. Hard work going up but splendid riding going back down ! I attempted to drive up Hardknot with my pick up and trailer but had to give up near to the top, It was so steep I had no traction to my back wheels and had to reverse half a mile back down before I could turn round.
there are several books available which give cycle routes through the lakes but there is also a cycle map. We bought it and I know it was quite inexpensive. I can't remember the name of it at the mo but I'll have a look tonight when I get home and let you know
------------- Camping season is here - bring it on!!!
as promised I have rummaged around in the odds and sods drawer in the kitchen and located the 'Lake district cyclists Lap Map'. There are 6 low level cycle tours detailed in it. There is 1 that cycles along the old keswick Railway and ends with a visit to Castlerigg Stone Circle.
the map makes refernce to the Keswicck Mountain bike shop which would lead you to think that they would probably sell the map.
I hope that helps. Have fun

Thanks Jane. I'll check out the Keswick Mountain Bike shop.
I am still deciding whether to take the bikes. We would like to do some cycling, but I'm worried about the extra weight (in addition to the camping equipment) on my car. I think the best solution is to hire out two bikes for a few days.
There is plenty of easy cycling around Keswick - the cycle shop will be able to fill you in.
Wouldn't recommend Hardknott if you are into easy rides and value your life! (Is a bit of a trek from keswick anyway) - we got a puncture coming down wrynose last week moving over for a recovery truck (of all things!)- road is very tight.
Having had 4 trips to Keswick since July we are a bit up to speed with the area, have a look here for a website that has cycle routes from Keswick.
One route I was going to suggest was a ride around Derwentwater, this is mentioned on the site I've linked too, as someone else said a ride along the old railway line would be good.
Daz we took our bikes to the Lake District over the summer on a bike rack with all the camping equipment in the boot of the car. We have a Rover 200 and didn't effect the weight of the car at the back end much.... Depends how heavy your bikes are and what type of bike rack you have..
Unfortunately we didn't get out on the bikes in the whole 4 days we were there because it rained and rained.
Nice place though for bikes, we were camped in the middle of Grizedale Forest. Don't worry about getting the car around the country lanes as well, little tip though, OH takes both front wheels off our bikes just to make the width of the back end smaller.
