Can anyone recomend a fishing tackle set we could buy for my son who is 11, he is new to fishing and is wanting to do some lake fishing, we do not want to spend a fortune, also can he fish without a license etc many thanks
Get down to Lidls as they have some cheap sets on offer at the moment. Most of them will start him off, after that go to a fishing shop and talk to the staff there.
He won't need a license if he is 11 but will when he is 12.there are some free stretches of water but a lot are controlled by clubs and he would need to check to see before fishing.

Hiya Vespanut,
whatever gear you plump for, you need to find out how to fish, many a youngster has packed it in through lack of knowledge. You really must need to ask other anglers how to tie a knot etc, etc.
It's okay looking on the Net but there is nothing like someone showing you how, some anglers are moody but there is always one goodun who would love to show yer how. Just getting the basics right and yer youngster will attain some success to keep him interested.
I supported young people where one young man hated fishing....until I took him and showed him what to do, he caught nine small fish and was hooked for life, good luck in finding a smiling/willing angler, there ain't many about.
Thanks for that we ahve some knowledge of fishing though husband has done mainly sea fishing, i thought it would be a good thing to get son into to keep him off the streets but you are definatly right he needs to be shown or he will loose interest, fishing is in the blood both sides of the family so hopefully we can get him interested thanks again
Hi I would join a club that has juniors,as they will have matches for them and adult anglers to look after them.Im retired and spend most summer days fishing, over the years i've looked after loads of kids.A good club will have anglers like me,prepared to keep an eye on them,in todays society you have to be careful but if you have a word with the baillif he should put you intouch with someone thats well known and safe to leave your lad with.A problem parents can have is if you have kids at different ages or a girl that isn't into fishing, once your lad gets the bug he will want to fish a lot in the school holidays,a nightmare trying to keep them all happy.your lad is to young to leave on his own,so if there is a responseable adult to keep an eye on him you can give him a pack lunch drop him off in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon which allows you to keep the other children happy,i hope this helps you.Good luck and take care.Roy
Hi I agree a club is a good idea, As for the tackle I'd say go to a local angling shop so they set you up the right gear at a good price as they want your return custom. Also they'll no of the angling clubs allow children to join. The club I belong to instance insists any member under sixteen must be accompanied by an adult who is a member also.
Check with your local Environment Agency as they do hold junior days down here where they get one to one tuition free. They also give away 'goodie bags' which sometimes has a free whip.
They are very good days so well worth checking out. A small pole is a good thing to start with then you are not having to learn too much at once and my son catches more than me when I float fish beside him.
