Why do so many people have bikes hanging off the rear of their car without having the legally required light board with number plate fitted when their bikes cover the lights and plate on their car. Its about time the powers that be started pulling drivers for this, so many campers are driving around illegally. I am a camper and lgv class 1 driver and always make sure whichever vehicle I am driving is legal. So come on cycle carrying people, help the people behind you by not having hidden lights and indicators on your car .
Here! Here! Couldn't agree more, it is so annoying when you come across a vehicle with none or hidden lights at the rear due to bike racks. Get a socket fitted and plug in the light board, you don't even need to fit a towbar!
And for all those out there that tow please, please, please check your lights before hitting the highway, I followed a vehicle and trailer combination the other day whose lights where wired up wrong, left and right indicators reversed, and brake light and side lights wrong way round, totally confusing to all of us following it!
I agree, there's nothing worse than following a car when there are bike's that look so unsafe hanging allover the rear end blocking lights, number plates etc ....
We have just started cycling and relised i would need to get a cycle carrier for camping etc ... i didn't like the idea of them hanging allover, so i bought one of these :-
Which comes with its only light board and number plate surround .... ok its a little more expensive but i thought it would save on fines and be hell of a lot safer at the end of the day :)
I have two lighting boards, one for each car. And yup, I always check all the lights are working before setting off, same as with the trailer tent. And (now this is really anal) we take a lighting board with us when we're off camping...not only is it essential when we're just taking the bikes out for the day but also it's come in handy at least once when the TT electrics died on us one year on the other side of the Channel.
First thing Richard did when we got the bike carrier was make up two boards, and wire both card so that they could be used legally.
Before we set out we always check the lights - even the kids know how to stand at the back and give the thumbs up/down.
Last summer when we went away, our friends had just had their tow bar fitted, and Richard who was following noticed that one of the indicators wasn't working - so fixed it when we got to site.
I know that it is possible for a bulb/fuse to go at any time, but this is not an excuse for obscuring your lights/number plates with bikes.
When my bike is on the back of my car it doesn't obstruct the number plate , and all rear lights are still visible . It's also very secure ; no movement at all on it .
Last time I had it on , coming through town , sat in traffic , I had a police car at the back of me . Obviously they didn't have a problem with it either as they didn't pull me over
This is one of my pet hates. I really wish the Police would mount a summer campaign and pull over the vast number of people who don't bother to make sure that there lights can be seen.
How about pulling over ALL the vehicles, including tractors, who are trailing with number plates that bear NO resemblance to the one on the towing vehicle!

Slight difference in the law regarding tractors.. They should still display a number plate and have lights on the implement or trailer if the tractors are obscured but the displayed plate does not have to match the towing vehicle it must however match a vehicle belonging to the farmer.
