We are camping in Beddgelert forest in two weekends time, while there we will walk up Snowdon. The obvious route from Beddgelert seems to be the Rhyd Ddu Path. Has anyone walked this and do you have any advice on which route to take?

There is also the snowdon ranger on that side of the mountain. The most exciting route is on the other side of the mountain - the snowdon horseshoe route, but involves scrambling and drops. On that east side the pyg track is probably my favourite walking route on the mountain.
You could always catch a bus around the mountain to pen-y-pass and go up the pyg track and come down the rhyd-ddu or snowdon ranger path. Of all the times I have been up the mountain I have been on the snowdon ranger once and never the rhyd-ddu path.
The east side of the mountain has just got the most interesting routes and the best scenery.
Go to Llanberis & get the train! You don't say how much experienc/kit you have. the horseshoe is superb, but the bit along Crib Goch can be a bit hair raising - steep drops on both sides & not a lot of room to pass people. Hope you get a nice day for it.
Without knowing how fit/experienced you are it's difficult to suggest a route. However, the easiest I reckon is to park in Llanberis, get the bus from the main street up to Pen y Pas. From there walk up the Miners track & then follow the path alongside the railway down to Llanberis.
We have decent experiance, did Scafell Pike last year and have doen the Big Blacks Challenge several years. Never been up Snowdon though!!! The Miners Track looks a good route Mountain Runner.

Hi,We went up the Snowdon Ranger path and came down via the rhyd-ddu path a couple of years ago, its then just a stroll back down the road to the car park opposite the Ranger station.
Hi
We've walked the Llanberis Path which follows the railway most of the way as we felt it was the only one that went from the bottom. Some tracks start half way up and that seems a bit of a cheat!
It's known as the tourist track but if you're unfit you will still struggle. We had done loads of walking before and had proper walking boots - but I still remember several of my toenails going black afterwards from the pressure on feet walking back down!
Interestingly when we did it, 2 squadies passed us running up - they also passed us again on the way back down whilst we were still going up!
Also - very bizare - as we approached the top we passed a nun dressed in full habit making her way down again!
However Hubby has also done the pyg track and says its a lot more fun, better views but harder going on the thighs!
We're planning on doing it again in May with our two children this time (7 & 13) - not sure how far the little one will get, but its all good fun.

The beauty of the pyg track is that the views take your mind off the ascent. The Llanberis path doesn't have the lowest start point - the watkin path does, but again there are nice views and a steep loose part to keep your mind occupied.
There are loads to choose from but one of my more common routes with a people who have a little experience is up the Pyg track and down the Miners, or vice versa. Easy enough to do with great views, but offers a little more challenge than the footpath from Llanberis and you have the feeling of climbed Snowdon rather than walked up it. The Pyg / Miners route is also a circular and so you end up back at your car at the Pen Y Pass car park.
Watkin path for me, is the best being the lowest start point, and some cracking views on the way up, and a nice scramble of a finish...just can't beat it

We did the vice versa a couple of weekends ago - it was great! We were all reasonably fit so wanted to stretch ourselves beyond the Llanberis path, but also not risk anything that would be for a more experienced party. It seemed to fit the bill very well.
If you are doing any walks from Pen-y-pas, you'll find that the car park isn't huge, is pay & display and fills up quickly. Best thing is to park at the park & ride at Nant Peris (down the A4086 Llanberis Pass toward Llanberis). The Sherpa bus back up to Pen-y-pas is frequent and free.

Have you seen the prices for the train?? Small mortgage for a family to go all the way up and back down.

The price is horrendous. We went up 5 years ago, I was pregnant and couldn't walk. It was a small fortune for 2 adults and a toddler. I remember having to pay for the toddler but he didn't even get a seat. The train was sooooo crammed he had to sit on us, no elbow room what so ever.
