There is a brand new multi use path (walking, wheelchair, cycle & horse) along the south shore of Kielder water in Northumberland. This links up to off road paths/tracks on the north shore giving a 27 mile circular route around the lake. There are several access points on the south shore from the main road, as well as a couple of refreshment stops at the visitor centres. Anyone wanting a circular route without all of the physical excercise can walk/cycle between 2 peirs & catch the ferry back to the start point. My son & I did this on Saturday by bike from Tower Knowe to Leaplish. An excellent day out. There are a number of art installations in the woods as well as campsite, bunkhouse & cottages in the area. There is cycle hire in Keilder village, & a swimming pool, craxy golf, bird of prey centre & some serious mountain bike routes for those inclined. One thing to watch in late spring are the midges! They can be vicious!
Just been up there again today & cycled the whole 27 mile circuit. The work done is much more than I thought. The path on the north shore is new, you could always cycle on the Forestry Commision tracks, but the path is for leisure use only with no vehicle access. Surface was good, small chippings. My only criticism would be the many hairpin bends on steep hills. Evidence of several skids into fences or over edges. Would ceertaionly reccomend it in spite of this minor point.
Well done to all involved. Lets have more of this type of project!
thanks for the info, can I just ask a question? Do you need a mountain bike to cycle the route i.e. something with decent tread & suspension, or would a hybrid manage?
My O/H and I did part of the ride in late summer and we both have hybrid bikes. We managed it fine but I would endorse Steve's comments about the hairpins. There are some quite steep bits and it's as well to take care. We actually had 5 punctures between us that day!!
And the midges.....not even the heavy rain stopped us being bitten quite badly whilst repairing the punctures - despite insect repellent spray AND wrist bands. It was so bad that we had to move camp after one night. Don't know how the locals cope!!
However, pick your time of year and enjoy it!

Mine is a hybrid & it did it fine. You could do this on a road bike at a pinch. Some loose gravel to watch out for though if the tyres are smooth.
