Just down the road in Lower Shiplake there is a nice pub called the Baskerville Arms. There were lots of families there when we were there during the bank holiday weekend. If you want to drink it's an easy, and nice 2 mileish walk along the Thames Path, or a short train journey away from Henley.
If you're happy to go for a little drive you should go to Turville. The pub there, the Bull and Butcher does good grub, and might look a little familiar. The windmill on the nearby hill will be very familiar, as will the church and two cottages next to it. If you go, I strongly recommend climbing the hill for the view over the village (that too will probably be familiar), but you get a worse view of the windmill. I'll see if I can post any pics.
Across the river, up the hill and left in Aston is the Flowerpot Inn. They do good food, a few real ales and are on a good 3 mile circular walk from Henley. I'd go there a lot more often if I could easily walk there!
In Henley itself you could always go the Catherine Wheel - the wetherspoons, or just up the road to the Argyle Pub - good food, but not sure about families. Avoid the pub on the river, next to the bridge - it's over priced and over busy!
Hope that helps,
Jenny
