It does get easier the more you cycle, and good on you! 17

After my partner's sudden death in Nov 08, I kept his dog as my own, and wanted to do more than just walking and playing sling ball with him, so I decided to get a bike, so that he can run along the bike when I cycle.

I last cycled in the summer of 1983, fell off the bike due to breaking too hard in the front down a slope.

I started to cycle around Feb 09, and could only do a few hundred yards before panting like mad due to being so unfit and overweight!

I had to change the bike from a 16in folder without much suspension to speak of, to a 20in folder with full front and back suspensions, and it makes such a big difference!

It is true that a bike can either put you off cycling or encourage you to go further, and I love my new bike.

During week days after work, I play sling balls with Borda the dog in a field, and then hook him up to a cycling lead that goes around my waist, and do a couple of miles around a disused car park next to the field.

I take him to a nearby forest at weekends to do a bit more, the most just over 6 miles, with lots of breaks in between.

He loves running along the bike, and it is good exercise for both of us. My weight has dropped and is now steady, so that I can eat whatever I like without putting on weight. The muscles are toner too, and I have gone down two sizes for trousers so far, magic! 17

I came back from a camping holiday up near Thetford Forest, and went to High Lodge Forest Centre for cycling 4 out of 5 days (first day was out due to being too tired after pitching up the tent). The most I managed was 6.5miles in a day, with lots of breaks in between, of course.

One of my knees used to give me pain due to my leg bending slightly inwards, being grossly overweight did not help. However, it no longers gives me any pain, as I have lost 1.5st, and have strengthened the muscles/joints in my legs.

I would advise getting a cheapo cycle computer, so that you can tell how fast and far you have done, and aim to improve as you progress, like increasing your speed and go a little bit further every day etc...

You can also improve by riding on higher and higher gears on the same ground to improve your muscle strength.

I would strongly advise you to learn to perform your own basic maintenance, as it is not difficult to do, and can save you a forture. Most bike shops charge around 30 GBP for a service! Try Googling bike maintenance course to see if there is one near you.

Loosing my partner was a life changing event for certain, and I miss him dearly. However, I am determined to look after his dog, and to improve my health, as he always joked I would die before him when he was alive.

I guess I have the last laugh now 17

hi dk168

Sorry to hear about your partners death, you are very brave.17

Thanks for the good advice, very informative!  I think I may want a cheapo cycle computer as you say, I have a pedometer for walking and enjoy that.

Yep I was definately panting! And yep it is also due to being so unfit and overweight!

Well done on the weight loss, thats fantastic, Im really pleased for you.  Hopefully your advice will aid my weight loss too!17

Last night went out on the bikes for an hour, I was so impressed.  Just got to keep it up a few nights a week.

thanks again, much appreciated

The problem when cycling that I find is that if you go by yourself you try to go flat out otherwise you feel that you aren't trying hard enough or are being lazy. If on the other hand you go with someone it doesn't seem as bad as you are pacing yourself with them and are maybe chatting at the same time.

I think the secret if you are by yourself is just simply to go at a pace that is comfortable for you.

I know your main issue at the minute is a general fitness one but having a decent bike that fits you is very important to your overall enjoyment of your ride. Cycle seats are an obvious issue to comfort and finding one that is right for you is a case of trial and error. I'd suggest a pair of padded cycling shorts as a definite requirement, if you don't fancy lycra you can buy baggy shorts that have a padded liner, alternatively buy padded underwear and wear anything you want over the top. Seat height and angle are other key points to address and you should do some research and again some trial and error to get this right.

When you go for a ride try to set a target of say 1 or 2 miles and don't try to do it in a quick time, you can note the time and distance and see how in a fairly short time your time comes down, you may then decide to try for a bit more distance but believe me as a person who has done a couple of fairly long charity rides get that seat and some padding sorted. Incidentally soft seats aren't necessarily better as they offer no support.

Another important issue is tyre pressure, too soft means more rolling resistance i.e. more rubber in contact with the road equals more effort to move it, its no design error that road bikes have very skinny tyres for speed.

I could go on but won't, I will however recommend this site though and in particular its forum, lots of info in there and lots of people just like me and you who have all been through what your experiencing and lots of inspiration too.

Have a look here and wish you were younger, fitter and had more time on your hands.

Now after reading all I've just wrote I need to practice what I've preached and get off my ass and on my bike, spent a lot more than I would've ordinarily done by buying through the cycle to work scheme run by my employer. Just bought some pannier bags as my intention is to do some cycle touring/camping and an expensive leather sprung seat so need to try it out.........hope its comfortable.

An hour of cycling???!!! Well done you!

Thanks for the kind words. Life sucks and I got the short straw this time, that's all. Onwards and upwards I'd say.

Keep up with the good work and remember to have fun!

lol i have just started cycling again after 1 yr not being on one.

When out with my daughter on sat last and we went on the penine trail in warrington, after traveling and chat we realised we had got to Walton Gardens, from our house that is about 12 miles round trip how impressed was I, but the next day i suffered lol.

the last time i went out i hurt for days and i think that put me off, since saturday i have gone out every day for 30mins, but i think i would like to get one of those light weight bike with suspensions, as i feel this would invite me to go out more, cause it would be more comfortable than my 6 gear hard seat and no suspension bike.

I managed to get a mountain bike from my local freecycle.  It's fantastic - 32 gears and so lightweight I can pick up with one hand easily.  So keep a look out... you never know

I cycle quite alot. I love it but the answer to your question Yes it does get easier. I don;t do wind or hills which is great round here as we have no hills but do get quite stiff breezes off the sea!! Nowadays I do about 1 to 1 1/2 hours per day and can clock up to 18 miles in that time. I feel fantastic though and have lost 2 stone and am back into a size 12 jeans for the first time in 17 years. Keep at it you will grow to love it.
