Hello, just wondered if anyone could suggest sandy beaches to aim for whilst looking for campsites in South Devon or West Dorset.  Have two active boys aged 3 and 5 who'd be longer entertained on a sandy beach.  Have looked on Google Earth, but it's not always evident whether the golden strips of coast you can see are sand or shingle.  Many thanks for any replies!! Andrea

South Devon sandy beaches: Dawlish, Dawlish Warren (very sandy and very busy), Teignmouth, Paignton 

West Dorset: Weymouth, Lulworth, Swanage, Bournemouth all sandy.

Depends when you are going these places get very busy.

Hope Cove near Malborough/Salcombe. Great sandy beach at low tide in a sheltered cove with rock pools, and a stream that runs on to the beach to allow for some fabulous 'civil engineering' works designing moats and lakes. Great because the kids can play in water without being necessarily right at the water's edge. Little beach left at low tide, but still some dry sand left at Harbour beach. Toilets and an ice-cream shop too.

We have been taking our kids there since they were toddlers - all teenagers now ... but they still enjoy playing in the sand.

Best sandy beaches in Dorset are Studland Beach, which is pure sand for most of it's length with sand dunes behind, and Bournemouth Beach. Nearly all the rest are mixed sand and shingle or pure shingle.

Thurlstone sands and Bigbury are great, good surfing at Bigbury as well.
