If you're visiting Keswick and it's a fine day the short walk to Friar's Crag and then up to the viewpoint of Castle Head is very easy and gives spectacular views over Keswick, Borrowdale and Derwentwater.

------------- I Think Therefore I Am I Think? eh? If all is not lost where is it?
Hawkshead - pretty little village but VERY busy, still nice for a pub lunch (sit in the pub in the square, outside and talk to all the dog owners!)
I personally love Grizedale forest, wonderful visitors centre where you can Go Ape through the forest on zip wires and ladders in the tree tops (feeling active and vertigo free) OR walk through the forest and look at sculptures (feeling like an amble and a picnic) OR go in your car to the car park, walk to the big restaurant and sit on big leather sofas and eat cake (if you are feeling totally couch potato and watch to watch others doing aforementioned activities!)

An interesting (or not) fact - there is only one lake in the lake district Bassenthwaite Lake - the rest are "waters" or "tarns"

I'm probably too late replying - but how did I ever miss out the west of the lake district all these years- truly wonderful - Eskdale, Wastwater, Hardknot pass......................just back and wish I could have been there another week. Will certainly go back! And the small steam railway (to Ravenglass) is well worth the trip!
