Lidl have inflatable kayaks coming in again this week http://lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/index_11045.htm, does anyone have one of these? Are they any good? I ummed and arred last year about them but they had sold out by the time I had decided to get one. Now I'm umming and arring again this year! I want to use it in the sea (close to shore) and my manin concern is that there doesn't seem to be a lot to support you 'on top' so I'm a bit worried about falling off.
It looks similar to the one I've had my eye on Seablade
I've not been in an inflatable one before but found sit on tops to be very stable. The Lidle one looks fine for sea shore paddling, in calm water, you know where you're paddling at the same distance as swimmers. Obviously it's not intended for going out to sea :) I'd be interested to know how rigid it is compared to the Seablade.
Thanks both.I just want it for paddling along on a calm sea near to the shore line, Same sort of dangers as an inflatable dinghy I guess (which I know can considerable if you go out too far!). I'm hoping not to be picked up by the coast gaurd Ideally, I'd like something more solid but given budget and storage space I think these seem like a fair compromise. I do like the look of the stearns one but that price is a week or two in the sun for me
Those that you sit on top of are considered safer for novice canoeists because if you capsize you don't get your legs stuck inside and panic. I don't know if the Lidl ones have the facility to attach an ankle line but a good idea so you don't lose it (or it loses you) when you fall off. Always wear a life vest whether you can swim or not... there can be some strong currents just offshore.
Not trying to change the subject (haven't found another forum wit advice I'm seeking) but what are the rules when it comes to putting a kayak/canoe in rivers? say for instance the River Trent?
Can you just pick a spot and go for it? I would like to buy something for my son and myself to start a new sport.
thanks

People say you have to travel to see the world. Sometimes I think that if you just stay in one place and keep your eyes open, you're going to see just about all that you can handle.
Thanks Andy! found loads of information and the answers I was looking for.
cheers

We have some of the worst access for kayaking etc in Europe. As you will have seen from the BCU website the best thing is to join and get the sticker which will give you access to some waterways and also insurance.
I managed to get two of the only three in our local Lidl (I was fastest with my basket down the aisles The outer is thick material, the inner thick plastic, and it's blown up in 3 sections. There are 3 fins to be fitted to the underneath to help stability. It seems great value for money. We only also want them for playing in the bay in Cornwall in the summer, so great for putting in the trailer on the back of the pushbikes to get them there, and they only take minutes to inflate.
Now to find some lifejackets, my daughter's outgrown hers and I'm not too happy just wearing a buoyancy vest, so that'll be something to hunt out when we get there in July (I've seen them from about £20 on ebay, but want to make sure what we buy is safe, especially for a rusty swimmer like me
Think you'll be out of luck if you're looking for one now the way our stores sold out so quick though.
Overall build quality of Kayak is good, it seems strong and robust. The 100kg weight limit is important and I think heavier than this will be an issue. Accessory quality is not very good, plastic clips on seat back and backpack and not compatible and break easily. Storage comparment on back of Kayak is not waterproof and infact once fulll of water is heavy and effects Kayak balance badly, I suggest filling this with foam and sacrifice the storage as its useless. Paddle is light and can be bent or broken relatively easily but does perform well.
I paid 100 euro and I think it was worth it. There are a few dissapointing parts but overall for value for money its good. Its a cheap way to get started and find out if you like kayaking. Its easy to store and transport and inflates quickly and easily (no pump included).
