Hello

We are looking for a cycle carrier to fit our Vauxhall Meriva and are currently going round in circles deciding which is the best option.

We use a roof box so roof mounted is out, so are looking for rear mounted options.

The tow bar mounted looks the most robust but would prevent us from towing a trailer, a normal mounted holder would also cause the same problem.

So we are really looking at a high mount carrier, which raise the following question:-

How strong / secure are these?

As the lights on the Meriva are high up would we need a light board?

Would be really interested in any information from other Meriva drivers who transport bikes.

Many thanks

Mike

How many bikes do you need to carry?

I don't have a Meriva, but I use the Thule Clipon on a Mondeo. The mounting is very secure as it clips rather than straps on (I can never really trust straps). We use the lower mounting version that takes 3 bikes hung from the top tube. The Clipon high mounts them higher on a wheel support rack.

You can get towbar mounted racks that allow you to tow as well. You can probably carry 2 bikes on there as well as tow. Depending on the trailer nose weight and clearances.

Thanks for the reply Scrumble

We need to carry 3 bikes at present, although in future that will be 4 (we will have to look at smaller roof boxes then.

The website link was really useful especially the tool to check what rack fits what car, by the looks of it we will need a lighting board regardless.

Thanks again.

We use one of these high level carriers from argos on our zafira.I can get 2 bikes and a trailer bike on it ok and its really sturdy even doing speed on a motorway.

The first time setting it up takes a bit of working out but after that its easy to fit and remove. After putting bikes on it and driving a little way down the road, pull over and tighten everything up a bit more and youre all set for a long journey.
Peanuts too at its present price.

I had a Meriva with a 3 carrier bike rack mounted behind the tow ball which worked well even with 3 bikes and a trailer. The car was under powered though (the 1.4 petrol) so its gone. The replacement Peugeot doesn't have a tow bar (but is more suited for carrying the Canadian Canoe) so the rack will be going as soon as I get round to advertising it...
