I would advise going to High Lodge and pick up as many leaflets on trees and birds etc., before venturing out to other parts of the forest that are free.
This way, the children and still practice recognising trees and birds as you walk/cycling/picnic etc...
Personally, I would get a multi-day ticket so that I can return and stay at High Lodge as many times and as long as I can - my dog and I love it there!
