Hi all
Of to Ullswater this weekend stopping at Waterfoot Park , Pooley Bridge for a few nights.
Its been twenty years or so since we last visited the lakes and our only plan so far is to get the Steamer to Glenridding and walk back to Pooley along the eastern shore.
Would appreciate any ideas on other walks in the area, must sees or tips for a rainy day ,also good places to eat and drink in the area.
Cheers
We were there a few weeks ago, just for a couple of days. Unfortunately the weather meant that going up the hills was just walking in cloud so we stayed low level. We did the same walk as you mention, and then we walked round Thirlmere. There's a pathway that says it's about 10 miles round trip - at the south end there's a farm selling the best free range eggs we've tasted.
If you do go to Thirlmere there's 2 Water Board car parks on the east side and a few down the west side - all of which charge silly amounts. But there is a large free parking area right opposite the north east car park, and a small free car park just to the west side of the dam. Thirlmere is very low, but the pathway is still quite muddy in parts.
What did you make of the Ullswater walk and was it easy to navigate ?
How long did it take you , reason i am asking is if we walked to Glennriding would we have enough time for a few ales before the last steamer to Pooley which i believe is 4.45 or would we be better doing it in reverse?
Never done a fell walk before but it is something that really appeals to me , will look in to that further

There are two campsites of note in Pooley Bridge. Waterside House is the lovely farm site with pitches up to the waters edge. Park Foot is the huge site on the opposite side of the road, which is very commercial but has a useful shop!
Ullswater is one of my favourite parts of the world, and the very reason I couldn't emigrate to Australia.
Hope you enjoy!!!!

We are off to Hillcroft Park in Pooley Bridge in August. Would appreciate the heads up on where to go and what to see. Hoping for a relaxing holiday, walking and chilling with 2 kids and a dog. Would also like to see some of the area further afield if possible.
Mr and Mrs C
We stayed at Waterfoot Park which was on the opposite side of Pooley to Hillcroft.
I would imagine You've got a five to ten minute stroll in to Pooley uphill on the way back.
Pooley itself has Three pubs , the Sun Inn did great food and all three had outside areas for kids to play in.
The Lake Steamers run from Pooley to Glenridding great way to waste half a day.
Walking wise plenty of options for young and old.
Penrith only a ten minute journey in the car
Honister slate mine well worth a visit
Keswick great little town about 15 mins in car
Aww thansk so much. I daresay we'll feind our way around but its always nice to know the palces worth noting. I found loads of things to do, but having the dog with us for the first proper holiday is restricting (not that we'd do without her lol). Im sure so long as the weather is decent we will have a good time xx
Years since I stayed at Ulleswater...we stayed at the Ulleswater camping and caravaning park(As you come off the A66 you go along the road till you come to a junction...turn left it takes you to Pooly Bridge...turn right takes you to The park I mention(if its still there??)About 1/4 of a mile past the park there is an old church on the left hand side...a bit further on there is a public right of way that takes you along the edge of the fells to Aira Force(a large waterfall) You can of course take the car to Aira Force park in the carpark and walk up through the woods to the waterfall...
On the other side of the lake(through PoolyBridge) there,s a nice drive to a place called Martindale...once there...there is the option of walking up the hill on your right for a wonderful view up the full length of the lake....or you can follow the road On foot or by car to an ancient old church with an old Yew tree in the grave yard...Church doors are open during the day...not a lot inside...but gives you a sense of the "older times" Sorry for the sketchy directions..its been a while...but hope it helps....
