We were there a few weeks ago, just for a couple of days. Unfortunately the weather meant that going up the hills was just walking in cloud so we stayed low level. We did the same walk as you mention, and then we walked round Thirlmere. There's a pathway that says it's about 10 miles round trip - at the south end there's a farm selling the best free range eggs we've tasted.

If you do go to Thirlmere there's 2 Water Board car parks on the east side and a few down the west side - all of which charge silly amounts. But there is a large free  parking area right opposite the north east car park, and a small free car park just to the west side of the dam. Thirlmere is very low, but the pathway is still quite muddy in parts.

the KINGS ARMS PUB in stainton does excellent food at very reasonable prices, its a short drive from ullswater if the weather lets you down.

Years since I stayed at Ulleswater...we stayed at the Ulleswater camping and caravaning park(As you come off the A66 you go along the road till you come to a junction...turn left it takes you to Pooly Bridge...turn right takes you to The park I mention(if its still there??)About 1/4 of a mile past the park there is an old church on the left hand side...a bit further on there is a public right of way that takes you along the edge of the fells to Aira Force(a large waterfall) You can of course take the car to Aira Force park in the carpark and walk up through the woods to the waterfall...

On the other side of the lake(through PoolyBridge) there,s a nice drive to a place called Martindale...once there...there is the option of walking up the hill on your right for a wonderful view up the full length of the lake....or you can follow the road On foot or by car to an ancient old church with an old Yew tree in the grave yard...Church doors are open during the day...not a lot inside...but gives you a sense of the "older times" Sorry for the sketchy directions..its been a while...but hope it helps....
