Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I'm looking for information on travelling around the Lake District without using the car.

Going in a few weeks and the budget is really tight so I'm trying to find out if there are any travel passes or the likes that we can buy so we can use the buses / trains / ferries as much as we like for a period of time.

Want to keep car use to a minimum if possible.

Thanks

I think there's a Lakeland Rambler bus service (not 100% that that's the proper name)
Some of the train services are OK

Not sure of lot of it 'meets up' with each other. I know it's expensive to use the buses around us so not sure it will be all that cheap.

We have the Pack Horse service for people walking - they pick up and deliver you bags to different B&B's/Hotles for you as you walk the Coast to Coast - C2C (again no idea how much it costs)

There's also somethig called the Mountain Goat

This may be useful

Thanks for the info Keely, will have a look at the links.

Buses are pretty expensive by us too but having spent a fortune on car travel when we stayed in the Lakes last year we thought we would give it a try.  Its not so much the fuel which hits the purse but the parking costs.

I got a copy of the Cumbria and Lakes Rider booklet from tourist information service which I'm slowly going through.  Looks like there is a weekly travel pass available for £24 each which is a lot less than what we will pay on fuel & parking.

Might just leave the car on site and travel around by bus, be a bit cheaper than car and it will give us a rest from driving.

S

sarah. there is a bus that tours the lakes and parts of the moutains. dont know what it costs tho.but you can get off at various places and catch the next one that comes. it is i am fairly sure. called the MOUNTAIN GOAT. now as for the dates it runs. i would assume still running now. but as summer season is near to a close. i cannot confirm that it is running now. hope that helps. this bus i am sure goes thru to keswick. i dont know the starting point of this bus service. but a bus from carlise takes you to keswick. no 500. once an hour i think. or every two hours. hope this helps you some.

Not a lot more I can add to this other than to point you to Northern Rail's Lakes Day Ranger. Norther Rail do a number of other Ranger tickets if you want to go a bit further afield Accessed from this page here. We found however when we used the Coast line to get to Carlisle from Ravenglass that it was cheaper to get a Duo ticket (ordinary day returns with the second person half price) because we didn't want to get off anywhere else.

Was a time when the Post Office vans had seats in and you could get a ride on them.

Don't they do that anymore?

There's a fantastic guide book on this subject, called something like The Lakes Without a Car (not a snappy title, but it does what it says on the tin!)

We sell it at work.

It's got public transport and walking directions to lots of the main walking areas.
