Hi

We're off to The Isle of Wight in a week and staying nr Ventnor for 2 weeks. Hubby likes a bit of sea fishing / beach casting and was wondering where the best places to fish would be?

What species would he be likely to catch and can anyone recommend the most suitable bait to use.

Many Thanks

Me again!

We tried the sea fishing thing, but rather unsuccessfully, which is why I can adivse you so thoroughly on places to eat on the Island!

We went to Wheeler's Bay, small bay just round from Ventnor, towards Bonchurch and did no good. We also tried off the small pier in Yarmouth, lots of other people fishing off here, and some got a couple of Mackeral but we got naff all! Apparently, off Fort Victoria just outside Yarmouth can be good, bloke on our site had caught a sea bass off there.

If you do well, let us know where, as we're giving up on the sea part and heading to Pillaton for some fresh water fishing!

Hi again brummielou

He'll probably try one of the coves or beaches nr Ventnor and I think he's read somewhere that the pier off Ryde? is also good.

He usually only catches mackerel but when we were down in Dorset in July he caught 2 plaice at West Bay (and just as he was about to give up as well)!

If all else fails I'll find a good chippy ....

There are plenty of lovely coves around Ventnor - most of which you can only get to by foot, but it is so pretty around that area that I think that's the best way to explore anyway!

Ryde was about the only place plaice? ;-) we didn't go to at all, on our list for next time!

The Crab and Lobster at Bembridge do GREAT seafood - but we would never find it again without the satnav!
Good Luck - when are you off?

(BTW - sounds like Mr E is more successful than Mr Brummie! First time he'd tried - methinks he needs more practise!)

I've never tried it myself, but some friends did well around the Blackgang Chine area - mainly bass.

Yes, we stayed at Chine Farm (lovely site BTW) which isn't far from Blackgang, and tried at the beach near to the site. Again, to no avail. Would have loved some fresh sea bass cooked on the barbie. =(
