Just returned from a few days at Kinlochewe where we had a failed attempt at reaching the top of Slioch. We were on the final stage before the ascent to the summit, when I started to get severe cramp in my thighs. Mrs. Lightning also managed to twist her knee, so we thought it wise to return.
My cramp was extremely painful for a while but gradually eased, although Mrs.L's knee was still sore.
So, has anyone got advice for avoiding cramp during climbs?
We're both fit, both near 60 and do a lot of moderate hill walking. We took plenty of water - though perhaps more would have helped. Slioch was just a Munro too far for us.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Not really certain but I vaguely remember my brother saying he put a bit of salt and sugar in his water. He had the tip from my father as a help against cramps.

Potassium is good for cramp a banana will relieve them almost immediately. My husband gets cramp a lot. He swears by bananas. Or calcium in tablet form.
You can also buy some tablets from the chemist called Crampex, hubby used to take them when he was doing heavy work in the building trade which caused him to suffer cramp in his calf muscles after climbing ladders numerous times during the day carrying heavy loads. Also good for relieving night cramps.

I always have a banana on a walk in morning and an apple for afternoon. Oh! and of course a lovely sandwich and cereal bar for pudding at lunch time. Lots of water too. Oh and maybe a fluff covered toffee, Werthers are nice.
