I think the coast is about 12 miles from Cheddar. Apart from the gorge and the caves I don't recall seing anything specifically for children there, but Wookey Hole is not too far away and that also has caves, much of which is themed for children.

It is possible to climb to the top of Cheddar Gorge and at the top is a tall watchtower which can be climbed. Gives fantastic views down into the gorge and across the Somerset levels all the way to Glastonbury Tor.

I don't think there is enough to keep children amused for long, so Weston Super Mare might be better.

My dad lives in Burnham on Sea, when our children were younger we used to take them here.

There is also a animal rescue place which has open days (baby badgers and the like) which has various open days in the season. It's really nice.

If you go to the beach at burnham, you will probably see my dad playing golf on the club that is there.

Someone else has also mentioned Wookey Hole, which small ones like.

And Bristol isnt too far, plenty of things like at Bristol, ice-skating, cinema's, theatres, shopping etc.....the aquarium is pants though.

Also avon ski centre is just up the road, toboganing (sp) and ski lessons are a fun way to spend a few hours.
