So.. booked Broadway House for Thur-Sun this week. Just wanted to know what the area is like for young kids (2 and 4.5), and how far the beaches are/what they are like?
Beach is a fair way really, but not too bad. Burnham on sea is probably your best bet. The caves etc used to be priced with a one passport does everything thing, which is really expensive. I believe they still do this. I never do the caves therefore!! But there's a cheese factory in the gorge which is quite fun, and the gorge itself is worth a drive through.
From Cheddar you can easily go to Wells, visit the cathedral (entrance by donation), and don't forget to watch the clock chime the hour. You can get to Glastonbury or Street. There are parks all round the area to take the kids to.
Hope that helps for starters
------------- Single mum of 4 crazy children!!
2011 So far...
April - 2 nights in Easter Hols in Haven, Burnham (down the road).
Taking my sister and family for a trial camp locally 20th May
GLASTONBURY!! And *no* kids this year!! (Working: secure camping too!)
Chy Carne July/Aug 2011...
I think the coast is about 12 miles from Cheddar. Apart from the gorge and the caves I don't recall seing anything specifically for children there, but Wookey Hole is not too far away and that also has caves, much of which is themed for children.
It is possible to climb to the top of Cheddar Gorge and at the top is a tall watchtower which can be climbed. Gives fantastic views down into the gorge and across the Somerset levels all the way to Glastonbury Tor.
I don't think there is enough to keep children amused for long, so Weston Super Mare might be better.
longleat park is not to far away about 24 quid for a passport ticket (not 100% but think this is for 2 days) gives you full access to all the parts of the park
a friend also told me of a rafting center near portishead
named the outer edge
other than that i think google could be your friend for a few hours a good random search

If you're in Wells the local swimming pool is great with water spray and a whirlpool.
The Longleat passport lasts for the entire season, so if you're on a short visit it's probably best to get a 1 day pass for the safari park.
There's a ski centre just up the road, but that's best for older children.
Weston is best for the beach and there's lots to do there - a mini "London Eye" and the newly reopened pier for starters.
Google Puxton Park which is not too expensive. not too far and a good day out for small children.
Forgot to mention the Bishop's Palace in Wells. Take some bread for the swans. They probably won't eat it but there are always loads of greedy pigeons for the 2-year-old to chase.
after more research into what me and the OH are going to do NOW long leat is of the card as the feedback page for longlest is fully of nothing but complaints so we decided to give it a miss, I dont think ive ever seen so much negative feed back to anywhere

I couldn't find their feedback page! Still, it's really expensive but little kids love it.
If you Google "Heaven's Gate" - it's a steepish walk on the edge of Longleat with a tremendous view and some modern standing stones. Best of all, it's free.

Not sure where you have been looking but the Longleat website doesn't have a feedback page. As a local who spends time in and around Longleat pretty much every week I think its a great place but it is getting pretty expensive now. It's also in common ownership with the Cheddar caves complex.

There is a lovely walk that takes you along both sides of the gorge with great views and they will be tired out afterwards, so will you. You could try geocaching too.
