has anyone got 1? can you explain how they work? Do they lift the front wheel off the floor? Can the handle bars still be turned side to side or does it make them rigid?
What are the advantages over a trailer bike like this?
When we went to clumber park recently we hired 2 of them for both our girls aged 4 and 5, I didnt trust my 4 year old so were going to keep her in the trailer buggy untill next year but the older 1 was fine on it so now now im not sure weather to get her the trailer bike or the bar to fit to her own bike, im just not sure how that bar works?
Much better to get a trailer bike. These things tilt the bike back at an angle, which is not comfortable for the child on any kind of long journey. Trailer bikes are fantastic - we've had 2 for our children, and you can comfortably ride for miles. One of them even has 6 speed gears fitted! I got them at www.sjscycles.com.
The trail gator is great as it allows your children to ride solo but when they get tired you justnunfold the bar from your bike and clip it on to the bracket on the front of theirs.
Not very stable on the smallest size bike wheels though as the vhilds front wheel gets lifted quite high off the ground.
Found it really useful when we wanted to do longer family rides
The trail gator is great but it will lean to one side if it not set up properly both our kids have used it and they love it . If there starting to ride them selfs its just perfect . It means you can go for longer rides allow them to ride and then tow them along when tired or through town
you can use the trail gator with stablizers if there still using them ! When we intended to go some distance id turn the stabalizers up to make things safer at speed towing
The trailer bike is just that a trailer no opportunity for little ones to ride by them selfs
been using one for a few months now for the youngest. its great as it means he can ride on longer journeys with me. yes it lifts the wheel off the floor and puts the bike at an angle , but not too severe.
took about 30 minutes to fit , but if the brakes on the childs bike are centre pull you will need an adaptor or a old set of v brakes to replace the centre pull brakes with. not beyond the ability of any competent person.
cheaper to get from rutland cycles online or decathlon though.
I would get the trail gator. When my little guy was about 6, he decided that he was too old for a trailer bike. No way would he use one anymore!! But he still got tired on long rides. With the trail gator, he could bike on his own until he got tired. Then he was quite happy to get hooked up and be pulled by Dad!
If your money is unlimited, get a trailer bike for now and a trail gator later. But if you are looking for the most economical option, a trail gator will be useful for longer (in my experience).
